I've been on a IPA/IIPA bender of late. For the last 6 months or so, all I've been drinking are IPAs. Each trip to the bottle store results in a six-pack or two of a new IPA.....so I've gone through plenty of craftbrews in that time.

Problem is, I'm now finding I'm "burned out" on these hoppy beers. The idea of another IPA doesnt appeal to me one bit. In fact, I'm sitting with SN Celebration ale and Victory Hopdevil sixers in the fridge that I just cant motivate myself to drink.

Has anyone else gone through this -- where you drink so much of one style and then just cant touch it anymore?

Need to cut back on the IBUs and try something a little more mellow, but not sweet. Maybe some ambers or ....... ? Any suggestions?

BURNT HERE!!

I tried a break, but I keep going back.

2 months of baltic porters would cure you.

ANYTHING but IPAs for 2 months would cure you.

I'm just about there. Had enough IPA and IIPA variety to know what I like after about a solid year of brewing IPAs. Now I find myself very particular for certain types of IPAs but also more willing to try and appreciate different styles. Drink what you like and you'll eventually find yourself gravitating to something different. I've moved onto Belgian's lately..found that to be an easy transition.

IPA's for a long time? Go buy a tripel! Counteract all that bitterness with some sweet beer.

I went through a time of a lot of IPA's. I've been off them for a while, but tonight I'm drinking my first Ballast Point Sculpin. DAYUM I've missed the hops.

Take a break. Then one day you'll pick one up and say 'that sounds great about now!"

I'm sitting with SN Celebration ale. . . .

I'm still waiting on this nectar of the gods. But for your issue, the only suggestion I have is for you to mix it up more. Like anything, to much of anything can be a bad thing. I'm just sayin'!

Yeah, I can't go a week with the same type of beer.

That's the SWMBO's complaint, I have too many different types of beer in the fridge.
My reply: "I never know what I'll be in the mood for!"

Somedays it's something hoppy, somedays it's dark an malty, somedays it's sour or spicy.

But nothing but IPA's for a month, let alone 6 months? Yeah, I'd be burned out too....

Apparently you are not alone.

However, I have not experienced this phenomenon. Got a batch of Pliny in the fermenter now...(shivers with anticipation)...

I have a feeling IPAs will one day be the bell bottoms of homebrew. We're all sporting them now but sooner or later the fad will die and we'll back off. Sure there will be a few Disco Stus left but the rest will move on to something else. One day, our kids will look at our old recipes make comments like, "You put that much hops in your beer? Gross!" and they'll be embarrassed to be seen drinking with us when we get nostalgic and ask the barkeep for a Dogfishead.

Any suggestions for something nice, clean/crisp and refreshing, but not as hoppy as an IPA? Was thinking an amber or a red...something along those lines?

Hmmm I don't really like IPA's, at least not the mythology that BJCP and the US style guidelines have made of them. In the UK, they're not that strong, they're not that hoppy.

A real IPA does not have to be a hop monster.

A US IPA is to be enjoyed seldom, overdo it and you will burn out.

That said, I have 60l of an APA on the go at the moment for the wife. It's not really a style I am into.

I bounce back and forth between malty and hoppy. I really need somethign more then 2 kegs in the fridge so i have a healthy variation.

Brew theyself a bitter. I love bitters because they convey a nice malt flavor with enough bitterness to make it crisp, rather than sweet, and with some space for hop flavor that isn't overwhelming. My favorite style of beer, and what I aim for in terms of drinkability on most of my brews (dark beers excluded).

Mmmm.... this thread makes me really want a nice strong Torpedo or SN Celebration... yes, even at 10:20 in the morning.

I am a HOP JUNKIE

But my caramel amber is a crowd pleaser and my antidote

5 gallon

12lbs 2 row
1.5 lbs crystal 60
1 lb caramunich

1 oz cascade 30 min

WL irish ale yeast.

BMC and beersnob alike love it.

I'm happy to share, but It is my RED TICK CARAMEL AMBER if you want to give credit.

well you must be semi close to chico to have SN Celebration already and hop devil I don't consider an aggressive hop forward IPA, pretty balanced by the west coast standards.

At any rate, I love IPAs but I don't drink them soley, it is good to mix it up every so often so try some pales out or even some porters/stouts now that the cold season is upon us.

Gotta disagree here. Sure IPAs may fade in their fad-like popularity, but they've been around for thousands of years, and will continue to be a popular style indefinitely.

Personally I've been drinking mostly IPA for ten years now, and am fairly sure I will never tire of the hops.

So I encourage all of you who are tired of IPA to move to different styles and leave even more for me.:D

Not so sure about that.

Not so sure about that.

Yeah... "thousands of years" is a bit of an exaggeration. The british colonized in india in (I think) the 18th century, so the style is at most 300 years old. Plus, it almost died out for a while, living on the fridge until it's recent explosion of popularity.

at any rate... back to the OP...

I don't get burned out on any style, because I never go on benders like that. I always have a middle-of-the-road pale ale on tap, and my other selection (only 2 taps on my kegerator) rotates with the seasons. I've got a scottish on right now, a brown lined up behind it, and am making a porter in a couple of weeks.

darker beers through the winter on that second tap, and then coming back to lighter stuff in the spring and summer.

I NEVER get burned out, but I lose the sensation of bitterness, and must switch to less tasty beers until it returns.....

(not really less tasty)
