Nice write up Gary. They might be loosing a little market share from us home brewers but I doubt they will ever fall from the top or near top spot. Their beer is what it is and lots of it gets consumed.

Considering the beatings they take here and on ever other home brew forum, and just about every beer site in general, we shouldn't get too indignant when they poke back.

The statement that their brewing is "Not a hobby" indicates to me that they are poking at Craft Brewers, rather than homebrewers. I think they see craft brewing as an extension of homebrewing and want to further that association for people who may be sampling craft.

Excellent point!

But would you rather support the guy that made a go at the hobby that he loves or the factory that professionally cranks out beer.
Does the "Not a Hobby" quote that shocked me, appeal to the Bud customer? I guess I'll never make it in advertising.

I think they are alluding to the impression that some of the smaller craft brewers are operating more like an oversized homebrew setup, with limited QC, inconsistent processes, etc.

I don't think it's targeted to "Bud Drinkers" as much as people who may be tempted to try craft, or who have friends that drink Bud and they are looking for affirmation that drinking a plain light lager is still ok these days.

Remember, these companies are used to having nearly 100% market share by beer style. They make good money at it, and even if they emulated the craft processes and styles, people would not take them seriously. That simply doesn't appeal to most of the people who buy craft beer. They size and power exclude them from that club. At best they can only buy up smaller breweries and resell the beer as craft and hope the wrong people don't notice who actually owns that brewery.

Anyway, who can blame them. Craft beer has been poking fun at THEM for years now. What's good for the goose, as they say.

The best part about these commercials... you think craft beer is a passing fad and somehow not as good as Budweiser?

Why come you buy so many craft breweries then?

Excellent point even with that wording. [emoji180]

Personally I'm glad we have both. Variety is the spice of life.....

I thought that if I articulated it in such a way as to invoke the vernacular of their recurrent clientele, they may take my pensive inquiry more seriously, to some extent.

No, and that's why the commercials exist.

They wouldn't waste time or effort to jab craft beer people if they didn't think they were a legitimate "threat" (for lack of better word, I doubt they feel threatened).

I see these commercials as a bit of validation. (not that I need validation from the king) Craft beer is ever growing, and they are noticing.

But... what they are saying isn't affected by the reason they are saying it, yes?

I'm not sure I following what you are asking.

Sorry, I have the flu and am a bit medicine head today.

I worded that weirdly, I'll give you that.

My point is, it doesn't matter why they are saying it (we know they're feeling the heat).

What they are saying is "Craft is a fad, it's for hipsters and homebrewers, we brew beer the right way, funk everyone else."

If they really felt that way about it, they'd stop buying craft breweries like they're going out of style.

Again, the motivation behind the ads is/should be well-known, but that doesn't change what they are saying in them.

Oh ok. Yeah good point.

I like their "not sipped" comment. It's true because you have no need to savor the taste of their product. So go ahead a slam it so you get hammered quicker.

And then they'll follow it up with a please drink responsibly ad.

Don't get me wrong, I think people should drink whatever beer they like. If that's Budweiser, that's fine. It's just not my beverage of choice.
