Hi, I'm a fairly new brewer, but I've got a few brews under my belt and I've read a few books so I know the basics. What I've been hoping to stumble across is a comprehensive list of the types of hops and their flavor and if they are a bittering or an aroma hop. If any body knows of a good resource for me, I'd appreciate it!

Palmer has a chapter on hops in How to Brew. I'm sure you could find a more comprehensive listing, but it's a much needed text to own anyway.

One I found recently that I like because it has easy to understand and compare pictures, is brew365.com. Click on hops in the top bar and it gives you a graph showing the relative dominance of different flavors like citrus, pine, etc. Hopunion is good too.

I have read "Using Hops: The Complete Guide to Hops for the Craft Brewer"

Good read on history and technical details on how to choose hops. It contains data sheets on many varieties, including many that are no longer available. The newest varieties are not going to be in there, but it is a very good reference.

I've been assembling a collection of the producers' data sheets (prepping for an XML data set schema). Although I haven't yet posted the XML schema or my assembled data, the source data sheets are all mirrored from my "The Data" link at http://www.digitalgibson.com/beer/data/hops/index.html.

Note that there are duplicates between some of the data sheets, but these are ALL CURRENT sheets from the various suppliers, so they are ALL valid numbers. Also bear in mind that crops from other years or other sources are likely to vary from these...smaller shipments from these suppliers sent to LHBSs or smaller distributors may be outside the published specs for a given crop.

I'm concentrating on the major international suppliers, but if you have links for any I'm missing, please let me know so that I can add them in. In particular, I'm interested in adding more southern hemisphere and far east suppliers' specs.

greatlakeshops.com has a great visual poster/graph of the major Hops bittering and oils - It takes all those numbers and percentages and makes sense out of them. It displays them compared to one another - Simple! (Found it on London Amateur brewers site)
