How important is it to condition in the dark? Is okay to just keep them out of direct sun light.

As long as the bottles are not exposed to any sunlight or flourescent light, you'll be ok. Incandescent light has no affect on beer.

Also keep them away from high intensity discharge lights like high pressure sodium, mercury vapor, and metal halide(like in warehouses or Home Depot). All of them emit ultraviolet light. If you can grow a plant under it, it will skunk your beer.
