yep, there are some serious structural limitations to the retail situation...the door is where it is b/c we couldn't put the door under the fire escape. and not exactly ideal to have the stairs that go up the production floor directly across from the retail entrance door either, but that's the only area we had that provided enough clearance on both sides. super old building...no sewer or water on this side of the building and 90% of the SF of the 1st floor is up ~3ft/loading dock height from the retail floor level. and that's 3ft of reinforced concrete, which is why the retail shop isn't on Congress St. vs. the alley...this is the only area in the building that's at street grade. actually a little lower than at grade, we had to build that up a few inches higher than the storm drain. plus put in a narrow 'sidewalk' to keep the retail shop from flooding. the 3ft of reinforced concrete is effectively the footings for the whole building, so...that's what we had to deal with when we did the original build out. we struggle w/ the less than ideal conditions every day, but I think our process and team handles the lines and crowds as best we can to keep waits to a very bare minimum. we are always brainstorming ways to improve things, so if you have any suggestions, i'm def all ears...shoot me a message:
