Did they offer them to members first? I can see doing this if they're just hanging around and no members are choosing to buy them.
Depends on what you mean by "offered."
During the course of the first year, they offered extras of each allocation to members at $15 each. The extra requests were capped at 1 or 2 for each bottle, except Paradiso, which I believe we were offered up to 4 of, and Knight Weisse, which we were offered none of.
We were often told that even if we requested 2, we might not get that many, because there might not be enough bottles. Our requests were fulfilled (in my case, I got every bottle I ever requested - not sure if anyone ever got shut out), and then I was never again asked if I wanted more of anything, nor told I had the option to purchase anything more.
At the end of the year, there was then a sale to the public. Not to the next year's members - to the public:
At this sale, Knight Weisse was offered. This majorly ground my gears and was my first major issue in an ongoing series of my frustrations with NS, as that was the 1 bottle from year 1 I actually wanted more of (I bought a few others, but that was the one I really wanted).
Remember, this is in January 2014. Year 1 of exclusive beers has literally just ended. Brewery is now selling exclusive beers to the public.
I have no idea what's happened since then, but yeah - I have heard that some barrel society members have been allowed to purchase previous year's bottles. This doesn't bother me in the slightest, that's totally legit.
And, I mean, whatever. I'm being a whiny bitch, I get it. I just feel when you plunk down a lot of money to join a brewery society, especially one where the funds are basically being used to catapult the brewery forward, you deserve a little more respect. They're doing just fine even with having treated their BS members that way, so good for them.
