I brewed a 2 gallon batch on Wednesday and fermentation looked like it was going well. My landlord informed me that people were coming to the house this morning to install a chimney.

They have been banging and drilling all morning right on the other side of the wall where my carboy is located (outside of the house). I checked the fermenter and it is no longer bubbling.

Is it possible that the noise ruined the fermentation process? I'm thinking about pitching another yeast pack but it was only a two gallon batch and I don't want to overdue it.

Is there still visible yeast activity? Rafts, churning, krausen at surface?

Maybe your airlock simply got jarred loose, and therefore that shows no more bubbling?

If yeast have ears I'm going to start playing relaxing music in my fermentation chamber so they can better focus on their job.

I didn't think noise could affect yeast but thought I read somewhere that vibration can. The wall next to the fermenter has practically been shaking all morning.

Good point with the airlock, thanks!

I usually play GnR, noting helps fermentation move along like some head banging yeast. Occasionally I'll get some yeast hair in my beer though.

If I'm doing a big quadruple 10,000 IBU IPA I'll go with slayer, nothing like angry yeast to get that violent hop aroma going.

My ex used to get yeast infections all the time. The noise of her constant complaining about trivial things didn't cure it, so I suppose yeast isn't affected by noise.

All the noise didnt kill your yeast but it surely stressed them. If you have a jacuzzi I suggest putting the carboy in there with the jets on, as the warm, bubbly water will be soothing and relaxing to the yeast and will rejuvenate them. Rumor has it, some home brew stores offer yeast massages. If yours does that, do it for sure, it will help.

Seriously though, your yeast are fine. Bubbles are indicative of fermentation but a lack of bubbles doesnt mean fermentation isnt happening. It just means that CO2 is escaping elsewhere. Make sure the bung and airlock are pushed in snug and you'll be fine

If there's a $100 bill taped to the carboy will that suggest that the yeast are looking for a happy ending?

My ferm chamber (chest freezer) is in my workshop and regularly gets banged on, used as a sawhorse, and listens to rock and roll and high volumes and the yeast have never cared.

+1 to checking your airlock seal. If that wasn't the trick, were there any big temps swings during construction? I'd bet if you check gravity you will either see that you are still fermenting just fine or you are at your FG.

Took me a LONG damn time to decide whether or not to click this.

I think the vibrations have brought all of the CO2 out of solution.

And I thank the yeast gods you aren't asking if it's okay to bang your wife/girlfriend with a carboy nearby.

Hell, can you imagine how distraught the yeast would be if they saw "mom and dad" banging like a couple of high school kids after prom? That would scare the poor things half to death!

Im going to play metal so my beer has more of a bite.

Funny, cuz I was just talking to a brewer about Music and Fermentation at Epsolon tequila. So maybe the hammering does play a role :rockin:

My fermenter sits in the garage and is regularly serenaded with lots of loud rock....also gets visited by the cats (insert alternate name for cat joke here). My beers apparently like lots of Metallica and AC/DC. Wonder what would happen with Yanni?
