Hey guys... Just revised my APA recipe, any advice is appreciated!

FERMENTABLES:
6lbs of NB pilsen malt syrup
2 lbs of NB golden malt syrup
1lbs honey

SPECIALTY GRAINS:
flaked barley (1 lbs for head retention)
Flaked oats (1 lbs for head retention)

HOPS:
chinook (1oz at 60 min)
Citra (1oz at 15 min)
Citra (1oz at 0 min)
Cascade (1oz at 0 min)

YEAST:
Wyeast American ale 2 (wyeast 1272)

You can't steep flaked oats or flaked barley- you must mash them. Even mashing flaked barley may give you a pretty bad haze. Not a big deal if you don't mind hazy/cloudy beers, but I'd get rid of it and use carapils and/or crystal malt (40L is good in an APA) instead. I only use flaked barley in dark beers like stouts because of the haze it causes. Oats don't give me very good head retention, but instead a "slick" almost creamy oily mouthfeel. I think it's sorta weird in an APA, and I would leave that out also.

I like the hopping!

Are you doing partial boil and boiling the extract for the full 60 mins? Because if doing late extract additions or full boil, that Chinook IBU is going to be waaay up there. And if you aren't doing full boil and/or late addition, you'll probably end up with caramelization that will negate the use of the extra light extract.

Did you run the numbers on this? It looks to me this is solidly in the IPA range so if you really wanted an APA, you'll need to cut that malt and IBU down.

Maybe:
3.15lbs of NB golden malt syrup
3.15lbs of NB pilsen malt syrup (late addition)
1lbs honey (late addition)

SPECIALTY GRAINS:
1 lbs crystal 40

HOPS:
chinook (0.5oz at 60 min)
Citra (1oz at 15 min)
Citra (1oz at 0 min)
Cascade (1oz at 0 min)

YEAST:
Wyeast American ale 2 (wyeast 1272)

You could do other ratios of golden to pilsen but I used full containers. You could also pick one or the other. The golden extract already has some carapils in it so head retention shouldn't be an issue. I haven't used their pilsen extract yet. Whatever you end up doing, let us know how it turns out. Citra APA will be on my list to try this year.

My beers with flaked barley are crystal clear. Its interesting that yours are cloudy. Maybe its a different form of flaked barley. I use 1lb in all my beers for head retention.

I usually do a late addition but I recently bought a wort chiller (excited to use one) and I was planning on doing a full boil. However, this is my first go round with chinook, or a heavily hopped beer in generial. So this was very helpful. However, the idea of IPA doesn't hurt my feelings at all so I think I will go with the full recipe.

Thanks a ton for the helpful info!
