Any downside to swingtop/Grolsch-style bottles?

Before I buy a case, is there anything that makes them less effective or less desirable than standard pry-tops?

Nothing other than it still is not as easy as kegging. Pry tops blow.

No sanitation issues? They hold carbonation well? Do the seals ever need replacing? Any other hassle?

Went I used to use them, I would replace the gaskets yearly. Another things was to clean them with PBW, rinse and store with some Star San Solution right after finishing the beer. That way you never get any nasties in them and they are ready to go at your next batch. Never had any issues ever.

No problems. I opened a couple of Belgians after a year and the high carbonation was still fine.

They hold pressure fine, they last a long time, they’re no comparison for legging for simplicity, and they suck to give away because you probably won’t get it back.

I had issues with the plastic tops, they didn't hold carbonated because the seam stuck out a bit. I replaced the plastic tops for ceramic ones and haven't had a problem since.

They are fine for short term bottling. They do have more O2 ingress vs Crown caps.

I love my Grolsch bottles. The only drawback I can think of is that I am reluctant to just freely give them away to friends, which I would do with regular bottles.

Last Christmas I gave a friend a case of clean 750’s. Triple, Kolsch, Ipa, and Pils. He has collected bottles years ago. He tossed them out. [emoji15] I rarely bottle, but friends only get 12oz bottles now. I don’t even remove the labels on my give always anymore. 750/swing tops are worth $4 and up, not counting what the brew costs.
I just bought 3 sacks and 60# of specialties. $$$ Make the bottles seam cheap. Man grain has gone up.

They are great bottles to store carbonated drinks. The gasket may need changing in the far future. I have never changed any of mine. Make sure to store them without top being closed tightly. It will wear out the gasket faster.
