Hi

I'm a beginner (4 batches so far) and this is my first post. I'd like to know if this recipe is ok for an amber ale ?

6 lbs DME (pale)
1/2 lb Cystal (70-80L)
1/2 lb victory

1 oz NB @ 60 min
0.5 oz cascade @30 min
0.5 oz cascade @15 min

Thanks !

I would up the late hops; I did a West Coast amber recently that turned out great, and that used 4 oz of hops (Columbus and Cascade) between 10 minutes and flameout. Not too bitter (44 IBUs), but lots of hop flavor.

Assuming a five gallon batch and partial boil, your hop additions would provide approx 45 IBU's. That would be a little high for me, but I am not a hop head.

I recently did an amber ale with 38.6 IBU's and I think it is a little to high. I will reduce to approx 25-30 IBU's the next time I brew it.

I would leave the NB as it is and add the whole oz of Cascade at flame-out. That would give you 35 for an IBU number and preserve more of the floral notes of the Cascade. OR you could dry hop with the Cascade - either would work.

I don't think you will end up with an amber. It looks like it will be around 8 SRM, which is a slightly darker pale ale. An amber should be around 12 SRM.
