Tomorrow I'm making NB's Old Luddite English Strong Ale. This is also the first time I've used a yeast starter. Began a few days ago with the appropriate Wyeast 1968, 2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of DME. Let that go 36 hours on the stir plate, sat it in the fridge. This afternoon I added another 2 cups of water and 1/2 cup of DME to the flask, letting it sit on the stir plate until brew day tomorrow.

Here's my question: am I likely to get a blown airlock in making a 5 gallon batch in a 6.5 gallon carboy? Just worried about coming home to a sticky mess all over the basement, but at the same time I've never used a blowoff hose before.

Thanks for your help!

I brewed an Oatmeal Stout yesterday and pitched the yeast about 24 hours ago. I'm fermenting in a 6.5 gallon carboy using a WhiteLabs yeast, no starter. I've never had an issue fermenting 5 gallons in my 6.5, but this one has blown the airlock so I was forced to attach a blowoff.

Out of curiosity, I know these things can turn into bombs when the airlocks or blowoffs get clogged. I use carboy caps, are they more likely to pop-off before the carboy explodes than bungs?
