Hey all, my first batch is brewing comfortable at 74 degrees in a closet in my hallway. It is bubbling up a storm and all is well, but SWMBO keeps complaining about the bubbling sound. I tried placing a cotton ball in the end of the airlock, but the effect was minimal. It is an S-bend type airlock - one piece. Any ideas? Or should I just tell her it should subside in a week? Oh, and I don't have another place to put it where the temp is stable enough.

I'm sorry, I just have to say that this post really made me laugh.

Tell her it'll hardly be doing anything by day 5 or so.

Or you could rattle off a litany of the 100 or so top things she does around the house that bug the s--t out of you.

I don't recommend this second approach, though.

If i tried the second one I would indeed be sleeping in the closet with the carboy instead of with her. :)

Then it's a matter of what YOU want to listen to... the sweet, comforting sound of the airlock, or your nagging wife.

I think I'd sleep in the closet with the beer. :D

Please take no offense to this but, can she hear a gnat fart at 100 meters?:D I really have not been able to hear my bubblers unless standing real close, then again I used to turn the volume knob to 11 every chance I got.

LOL, I had an IPA in a primary bucket in the kitchen and the darn thing was fermenting so furious it was thumping. My wife said it freaked her out everytime she walked into the kitchen. My daughter just laughed about it everytime.

I did have my first batch in the primary in the living room (covered of corse) until SWMBO got up in the middle of the night and got the crap scared out of her by the thumper. The carpet rats (see my avitar) just growled at it. Needless to say the next day I got to clean out a closet in the spare bedroom to house my brewing stuff. Well I guess that is one way to get some space...:drunk:

heres an idea: there must be an easy way to hook up a small digital playback system that would run on the escaping c02, (you engeneering nerds can figure out how) the way it would work is everytime the airlock 'bubbles' a short pre-recorded saying would come out of the speakers, things like "you like nice" or,"did you get a haircut" or, "are you losing wait" stuff like that...i guess it would only work after the bubbles slow down abit...just an idea.

My wife (not a SWMBO) actually gets more bubbles (airlock
activity) than I do and loves it. She got into making mead and stole half of my
equipment. Now she has the good equipment that seals and she gets
bubbles and I don't. My fermenting bucket doesn't get a good
enough seal to produce airlock activity! We have fermenters all over the kitchen table and counter. I'm actually taking a trip to our favorite store after work to pick up some beer goods for me and another glass carboy for her.

As for your problem, maybe a blow off tube instead of an airlock wouldn't annoy her as much?

Use the old punctured balloon trick instead of an airlock.
Works only if fermentor is a carboy I think...

Put a pint glass over the air lock. It should be heavy enough to block the sound.

One lady I lived with could sleep through any amount of "natural" noise (cat fights, etc.), but I had to replace my clock radio because the whirling noise kept her awake!

Show her this picture of my set-up and tell her you are planning to build something like this. That should help her put a little airlock noise in perspective.

Try placing the cotton balls in her ears instead.

If that doesn't work, put them in your ears so you don't hear her complaining.

Yep, this confirms it. I really don't like you brewpastor!!!!!!

I'm kidding....I DO have severe brewer's jealousy though. :mug:

I feel your pain beerlover 84. Fortunately my brew set up is in the basement and well out of earshot. But I have to put my wristwatches in my sock drawer every night because my wife can hear them ticking from across the room - at least 15 feet away. I can barely hear them if I put it right up to my ear! That woman hears everything.

AHU

This is indeed a really nice looking system. :mug: And yes, your's is bigger than mine

But now you have to explain:

What are the copper coils on the conicals for? cooling?
Is the kettle in the fron the mash-tun or the boil kettle?

Kai

The coils are for cooling and are normally turned the other way and are suspended in the tank. Check out my gallery to see the system.

Dude . . .

I'm not one to tell people how to deal with their relationships, but . . .

GET OUT NOW!!!

If she's giving you **** over a bubbleing air lock I can only imagine what hell you are in store for.
If my SWMBO (who I fear) pulled that on me I'd tell her to STFU, head to the stereo and find something really loud and play it until she was deaf and couldnt hear the airlock.

and Brewpastor . . . I hate you:p
