About 10 years ago (so I was 30-ish) I just decided to go a month without drinking for no real reason. At the end of the month, I thought "I'm going to go a little longer". I went just under a year (10 months, I think) without a single sip of alcohol.



What was I thinking?

I did that with pop once. Ended up being a year. Now I only have it once every few months. I could never do something crazy like that with beer though. Longest I can go is like a week - when I visit home and spending a week with my dad who used to be an alcoholic.
