Definitely do a whiskey rinse. And definitely send that whiskey to me.

Depends if i get any out regarding to @finfans. Also if i put everclear to boost the abv. It has water in it now and Im thinking that might pull too much whiskey out. Too bad i cant put the whiskey that came out of the barrel. Its ranges 70-80 a bottle. Too expensive to soak into wood lol.

Im not in a big rush just want to move it over so there are yeast still floating around.

On behalf of this thread, thanks for that sacrifice towards sending all of us great beer.

You're all welcome. Anything I can do for this thread. :D

An over-abundance. It's what happens when my boss gets called out. I have a mess to clean up.

That's rough man. They should have figured out your worth by now. When you getting that raise?!

When you do this rinse do you rotate/shake the barrels every so often to evenly coat the interior?

Any cheap whiskey will do?

Any spirit with high enough alcohol content will work, but I wanted to use something with quality and wanted to stick with rye whiskey since that was what had come out of the barrel. And yes, I turned it a little bit a couple times a day to cover all the staves and the heads as well. It had been almost a month since they emptied them so my intention was to swell them back to normal, sanitize them, and get some nice flavors in there as well.

If I remember right from some of the distillery tours I've been on, they say they can lose up to 1/3 of the bourbon from fill volume to the angel's share, so sounds about right.

Yeah, the angels share kinda sucks. I've been monitoring humidity in my basement since I got them and trying to keep it around 60% so that is minimized. Right now though, I cant keep it above 40% consistently. I go through about 2-3 gallons of water a day in my humidifier.

You guys are saying it wrong... the 'angels share' is what evaporates... the 'devils cut' is what gets soaked into the wood.

I heard it on TV, so it must be true.

Three months overdue. Should be any day now and it is at least retro. However if it isn't something more respectable, they'll get the ultimatum. I'll take a pay cut and go back to FedEx if have to.

We ARE talking about what gets evaporated out or lost you dummy!

:D

Not once did I hear the words Devils Cut come out of your mouth, and we all know that's what its called if it goes into the wood.

Again, it's on TV.

I'm not a sexy actress, I cant use those copyrighted words. Expect your lawsuit in the mail any day now. @Ridire is typing it up as we speak.

Oh god. Team meeting about to start where apparently we're doing activities in groups. Kill me now.

I hate those type of meetings. Last one that involved all the contractors we (contractors and field reps) totally screwed with how it was supposed to be done. Made a good example of how there was no connection between the corporate staff and people in the field. :rockin:

OT finished a pot of coffee and changing to water for the afternoon.

.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. Cheers.

Angel's share, devil' s cut. Both new brewing terms to me.:)

Is there one term descibing the spirts lost to evaporation and another lost to absorption into the barrel itself? Or is it a catch-all term? Both combined being the angel's share?

ONT: I'm having my unoaked, unethically farmed, unaged, bovine mammary juice with my lunch.

I'm just giving fins **** re: the devils cut.

Jim Beam marketing lingo.

Angels share is a real thing.

You wouldn't want to use a super expensive whiskey, but I wouldn't use rotgut either. Whatever you put in will soak into the wood, but when you put beer in there, it will pull out some of that flavor from the wood.

Cool thanks.

One more (and final, I promise) question for all you barrel afficionados.

Is a Vinnie nail useful for non-sours or is sampling in a more usual manner what you do?

Beer in barrels. I'll just see my way out of this one..

I believe the devil's cut is a real thing. Then Beam tmed it for their whiskey. That's where they got the name for squeezing it back out of the wood. ;)

My friend is a big whiskey buff.

I think it would still be useful. It still allows you to pull samples without inserting anything else into the beer. One less point of entry for a potential infection.

Meh... no reference to it on the internet prior to JB's marketing blast.

So, while it's a real thing that's happening, I don't think it's ever been referred to as such prior to the branding.

I stayed at a holiday inn express last night.

Thanks BGBC. I'll look out for one. (Need a barrel first and beer to put in it)
