but then I'd have to go outside. and it's martha floccing cold. there's a reason we don't have an abundance of lizards here.:pipe:

I have a gecko named Mitsurugi.

Ok, grain milled.

15 lb 2 row
2 lb Vienna
.5 lb Melanoidin
.5 lb crystal 40
6 oz Acidulated

Should be nice and big. Debating a sugar addition but I'm damn near 1.090 as it is.

I've never used Acidulated malt before. Is it really beneficial in an IPA?

Water. Cleaning happened for about an hour, which means I wandered and dusted...cleaned a bathroom and gave up. I'm sure you all were wondering and stuff.

It is if you worry about pH.

The trace amount used to adjust really isn't detectable.

it's 0F here and wind chill is -24F. no brewing for ol' Klubby Face today.

So just a day full of berry pawnching then?

I had a BA Buffalo Sweat last night. I have tried pretty hard to like any version of that beer, but I honestly don't get it. It never makes me want to buy it again.

I liked BA buffalo sweat a lot more after I realized that it is only like 5% abv.

Coffee and toast. I made some jam out of a really funky cherry sour. It is freaking delicious.

Got Swmbo's car to the shop this morning to replace 2 tire sensors, and they were able to repair the one and replace the other for <$100. Beats the $600 quote from the dealership. About to hop in the shower, then go to a few breweries with a friend. Even got some too. Everything's coming up Milhouse today! :D

Makes sense. I should experiment. My pH is usually within a tolerable range, but I should try it out.

My pH is usually ok as well, but ever since I started tweaking it a bit, it's been netting better efficiency and I'm liking the feel more.

I don't have a meter, fwiw. Just flying blind on Bru'n water and my water report.

Also I should add that this is all anecdotal, I don't know if mash pH and efficiency are linked that much... Just my casual observation over the last few brews where I've changed the water and nothing else.

That's better than me, I bought a meter and keep forgetting it when I brew.

It's 5 degrees and windy AF... Garage brewing and cold man. Don't be too envious.

Also, this.

I'm sure the garage (pronounced the right way) will get nice and toasty as things progress. You could always close the door and get that nice CO induced mellow. If you survive you get to wake up to beer and BBQ.

That is a BIG a$s beer. What's the hop bill like?

An under-utilized malt especially if you full-volume mash. A great malt to use. I like. (Just don't make a SMASH with it)

(urge to link Braukaiser's lactate threshold experiment rising, rising......fading, fading aaah..)

I've used a meter for a while in the past. It's kind of a pain since you should to calibrate it before each use and the solution isn't cheap. I've found that bru'in water gets me pretty close. I always wonder about my numbers since cheap meters (~$100) don't have the best reputation per ajdelange.

If I was brewing to win a comp I certainly would use one. PH around 5.2 definitely makes the beer more crisp. I agree with psy that when my ph is lower my efficiency seems better.

I have a really cheap meter ($50) and it has always worked great for me. I calibrate maybe once a month and its never more than +/- 0.05 off. Its always nice to know mash ph incase something goes wrong. Example, i made a pale ale and forgot to switch a base malt from roast malt in bru n water. As you'd imagine, mash ph was 5.9. Beer turned out bad and i dumped it, couldnt taste the hops at all. Id still be scratching my head had i not checked. Too easy not to check imo.

And yes psy, mash ph does effect efficiency.

How does water:grist ratio effect efficiency? My latest brew was 1.25 qt/lb on a 17 pound grain bill and I got 73% when I had calculated 65%. I usually do 1.33-1.5 qt/lb on smaller grain bills and get around 73%.

I think it effects it if you go to extremes, but in those ranges I'm not sure youd see a lot of difference, or any like in you case. I always mash at 1.5 and I'm happy with my efficiency. Maltsers have a huge effect though. Ive noticed that the cheaper grain typically gets around 70% efficiency for me when i can get 80%+ from briess or other higher priced malts.

Pterodactyl

Actually no, been meaning to, just haven't looked out for it too hard. Still wary about the cinnamon, but you said it was good. So... We'll see.

Just comparing his to mine. Now i question why i only have one...

Edit: although, mine actually looks normally and not all funky shaped.

You guys open your smokers an awful lot while you're supposed to be smoking...

Oh and finsfan, thanks for stealing Gase, Eagles were pretty high on him.

I think mia was pretty high when they signed him. "Lets just take an oc with no hc experience of a 6-10 team and we will be better!!" Great thought process...

Great mixed bag in the thread today.

Smokers, meats, brewing, nonsense, the seemingly ubiquitous barbs slung @theCadjockey 's way, mash efficiency factors, pH meters and acid malt.

I have to say I like the friendly thread more and more. :D

Good to know.

@finsfan I'm a long time listener, first time caller. I milled my own grains for the first time and calculated an efficiency of 96%. Is this even possible, or should I find a new calculator? I'll hang up and listen to your response. Thanks.

Thanks for the call, Bill. Sounds like a typical problem i see with antsy newcomers and id also like to welcome to you the group. In short, you're not that good. Find a new calculator and stop dreaming sweetheart.

Seriously though, what calculator did you use? Was that mash or brewhouse efficiency?
