I am sitting in a hotel room dreaming of bottling my first batch when I get home.

However, I bought 22oz bottles instead off using 12oz. Palmers book recommends filling to within 3/4" but I am assuming that is for a 12oz bottle. Is it the same for a 22oz?

Thank you in advance for the advice.

I use my bottling wand and filling them up and removing the wand seems to leave the same head space as 12 haven't had any issues

same here on the bottling wand, I just trust it to do the guesswork for me on any type of bottle and it generally does a great job. I wouldn't consider bottling without one.

+1 on this. Just take the bottling wand, fill it to the top without overflow and when you remove the wand it's a perfect headspace. Then cap. Works for me as well.

Same as these guys I do almost all my batches in bomers and use a wand. As soon as it hits the top you pull out and have the perfect bottle of beer.

If you feel you need a bit more headspace, you can slide a piece of hose over the bottling wand, making it thicker and thus taking up more volume.

I've never encountered any issues with the standard bottling wand headspace on bombers, but carbonation may end up a little lower perhaps, or take longer.

I reused a Samichlaus 3L grolsch bottle and I had to use a length of tubing. When it got at the top, turn off spigot and remove. Pulling out the beer that is left in wand will give you the appropriate headspace.
Using a wand in bombers actually gives you more headspace. Which is probably the same as far as percentage of headspace goes in comparison to a 12oz

I think the wand leaves too much head-space. I fill to the top with the wand, then lift the wand up and lean it against the side of the next to raise the level to about half to 3/4 inch (about the standard lip).

- The less head-space, the less O2 you package in the bottle.
- The less head-space you have the more CO2 that goes into suspension (however, zero head-space is bad).
- The less head-space you have the less of a bomb you have in the event you have a bottle bomb.

Commercial beers do leave a large head-space. However, they get a shot of water just before the cap goes on. This water froths up the beer and fills the head-space with CO2 eliminating any O2 in the bottle. We don't have this option, so the level the big guys use is not necessarily the best for us.
