Has anyone else started their brews?

A few days ago I racked the old ale (group 2) onto about 3.5lbs fruit. Raisins, apricots, figs, dates, cranberries, and cherries. Added some clove and gonna let it sit on the fruit for about 2 months then keg and carb. It was tasting very good pre-fruit with the holiday spices added during the brew. But we will see where the fruit takes it in a few months when I sample again.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, yeah ... scroll up ; )

The only issue I see is that you just joined less than a month ago. Can another member(s) vouch for you? Have you done any trades on here?
No trades yet... But I could have a bottle in the mail this week for anyone who would want to vouch for me. No trade necessary. I'll just send you one.

Well then. If it's not too late to be accepted, I'll take #3 of group 2. The Spiced Dunkel Weizenbock.

Hey there. I am interested in participating.

I am in Canada, but I have a lot of friends in Michigan I can use as my mailing address.

I would be up for taking on the last open east coast slot. The Christmas Gruit

The last open slot is west coast, but you're more than welcome to join it still.

I borrowed Radical Brewing from a club member. There's not too much guidance on the saffron tripel, but I enjoyed the book. I came up with a recipe for 6 gallons.

11lbs Belgian Pilsner
2lbs White Wheat Malt
1/2lb Caramunich
1oz Hallerau FWH
2oz Hallertau 30 min whirlpool
3lbs of Jaggery
WY3787 Trappist High Gravity
Zest of one Orange
2g Saffron
2g Seeds of Paradise
I'm still debating between whirlpool or 'dry hopping' or making a tincture of the Saffron and the Seeds of Paradise. Anyone have a strong opinion?

Should get me to 1.082 OG, 31 IBU and 10% ABV. I'm hoping for a nice orange color/glow. We'll see.

I figure 6 months of age should do this some good so I'm getting ready to brew. I got some fresh yeast, the Jaggery and saffron today. Now I need the snow to melt off my brewing area. That 11 pound block of Jaggery cost less than the 2g of Saffron. Looking forward to brewing with it!

Can't wait to try it! Sounds awesome.

That is perfect. I want to brew it now so I can mail it when I visiting Milwaukee this summer. That one will benefit from some time in the bottle! I'll package it in old style Canadian stubbie bottles :) Count me in.

To be clear, @stansoid - You are going to mail your offer out in the Summer rather than Winter of 2019?
I re-thought that. Mailing beer in the summer is a terrible idea. I will send it in fall with the rest of them. I'll just make a trip to the states for some Christmas shopping :)

With more and more folks having success with the cheeper USPS shipping, this caught my radar again. Would like the 1st spot in the 2020 thread. [emoji6]

Just package like you normally do and split packages. I just wish they had a larger flat rate box! While it might cost $0-10 more than UPS, it gets there significantly faster (2-3 days across country). They also do not seem to give a sh*t when they caught you...hence the handwritten letter to me.

You and Scturo. Both packages today I received today we're usps. One was slightly leaking. I sent 2 crowlers ups and it was $30. Wife said I can order boxes online for free from USPS. Sounds like a deal. Maybe cut the $140 shipping to $100.

You can pick priority boxes up for free at your local usps. Walk in and grab as many as you like, no questions asked. My advice to anyone shipping usps is to reinforce the sides with another piece of cardboard, so the shipment is better protected. Add a noise maker and you should’ve good. You can even write in big letters “Fragile” in the box. Cheapest way to go. Happy shipping folks.

For me, it is rarely if ever the cheapest way to go. In fact, more times than not it is a few bucks more than UPS. However, it gets there fast so when I am shipping pipe bombs from ASB I do not have to worry as much.

Pipe bombs..humm..packing them in 4in PVC pipe should work.

I can ship 16 - 20 bottles/cans anywhere in the continental US for $40 (using 2 large priority boxes). I don't think UPS can beat that. I could be wrong.

It's all about box dimensions, weight, and number of packages.

You wouldn't ship two smaller boxes through UPS because of the cost, so you ship one larger one. It is because of that UPS is cheaper than USPS. At that point the box dimension plays a factor. If your one large UPS box is over $40 in shipping then you would drop down and package two USPS flat rate boxes as @Scturo notes.
