any one make their own 10 gal fermentation vessel? tired of slitting batches into 2 carboys. anyone modify a keg? what are you brewers out there using?

I am setting up a 1/2 Barrel keg for fermentation. I had a 3" tri clover ferrule welded into the bottom. Flipped it over and now I have a 2" drain that I added a long 90 I found on eBay and a tri clover butterfly valve.

Up top I will have a 3" cap with an offset 1.5" tc port with a T. Through the top of the T will be a racking cane with a 1.5" tc that will have a liquid out ball lock adapter. To the side of the T there will be a ball lock gas in post adapter.

There will also be a thermowell in the 3" cap. I am thinking about adding a sample port to the side too. Might still a ways off, but it is getting closer. I still need to figure out legs or a stand for it. I made it way more complicated than it needs to be of course.o_O

I got all my inspiration from Jaybird at NorCal Brewing Solutions where they have the coolest kit for fermenting in the keg. Check it out.

I'm also using kegs and jaybird's kit. I kept it simple and didn't add any additional drains. Recirculating warm oxyclean using jaybirds set up works well for cleaning.

I paid less than $30 bucks for 2 of my kegs and got one free. Hard to beat a stainless fermenter at those prices...

I use a sanke keg with a hole cut that fits a corney lid. I got a corney lid with a gas post attached so can do pressurized transfers. An orange carboy cap fits on the top and a racking cane fits down the larger opening of that cap.

I really want a French 15 gallon Demijohn to experiment with open fermentation large batches of Bret beet . Only if I had the room !

for the $ that jaybird kit seems an easy way to do what I want. Just wondering how you pitch the yeast with that thing...

I'm sure everyone has their own process. For me I pitch the yeast through the open top; then use an orange carboy cap during fermentation with a blow-off tube attached. I don't attach the kit from jaybird until I'm ready to transfer the fermented beer into corney kegs. Once that's complete, I use the kit to recirculate cleaner, rinse water, then star-san in the sanke keg.
