Been slow year African coffee - anyone want to grab some of this washed Ethiopian with me? It’s not a fruit bomb but it sounds like a good cup of filter coffee none the less. Bean stats check out - mostly 14/15 screen & decent density

Damnit......the one time i decide to eat lunch out and not in the break room surfing HBT. Blink and it's gone.

Need to try Hambela sometime. Hope its killer for you all. The Kenyan is growing on me. This one is sweet for a kenyan. With lemon behind that initial Kenyan flavor. Dont know how to describe that Kenyan flavor. Still on the fence.

Roasting a little slower into the end of drying and first crack. Really taking care not to scorch the beans. It is making really sweet cups. Happy cups all!

Bah, that's what I get for spending time with family! [emoji14]

Enjoy the beans guys.

I'll have to admit, I've made a few cappuccinos with your blend and they were very good.
I suppose that's better (artisinal) than pouring skim milk right into the mug.

Somehow my SIL said it tasted fruity, like plums. I couldn't believe it. I almost kissed her but then she said "it's creamy too, but that's probably from the milk I added".

So close!

Haha, my favorite is, " ahhh I love a dark roast", like its some magical drink to curl up with on a snowy day. I wont even give my in laws coffee anymore, they are happy with their keurig and are very stubborn to even taste fresh grade one Ethiopian. I cant deal with it anymore so I dont bring it or talk about coffee with them. My wife drinks coffee with flavored creamer and I have tested. You really lose any origin flavor. I do sometimes drink coffee like this, but rarely. I think I should keep my best stuff at work to enjoy at break, and any old coffee would probably do fine for home. I am done trying to convince people of the difference between charcoal and coffee. I want to burn a piece of bread and brew it. I think the flavor will be similar to the beloved "dark roast".

I think I've officially gotten anything I need for coffee. Nothing coffee related for me this year for Christmas! That's alright though. Maybe I'll splurge and get myself a geisha to enjoy all the madness being done.

I used to drink a lot of French roast, but after trying some lighter roasts, I am really enjoying the subtleties they have to offer. We do have a Keurig, as that's what I use when I want a cup of something with caffeine while I'm rushing out the door in the morning. Pressed coffee is too messy sometimes, and I just want one cup.

I ordered a Clever. Then I'll be able to use my own fresh coffee and make that cup in a few minutes.

Haha, I would do that to in a rush before driving to work. They are super convenient, there are some really good options for loading your own. The foil top is clever, and does keep the coffee fresh. There are probably some good ones out there. I pregrind and set morning timer, trading oxygen for convenience. Im happy to have it for my bad commute. Whats a clever?

When I first started roasting level didnt matter as much. Well maybe better put I was using my rig like a machete instead of a scalpel. Too light, too dark, it takes time to find a just right spot for yourself. But with a coffee that is fresh from yirgacheffe, especially that I know has really fruity flavors, I am super sad when the roast gets to dark. The coffee is great, sure, but everything I want from it is gone. As you roast more and more, and taste coffees side by side, it becomes more interesting. I dont have the skill or tools to foray very well into dark roasting without tasting to much char. Btw a good option on the run is cold brew! Microwave to warm it, and it really is a fantastic brew method. Use a french press or pitcher if you dont have a cold brew cup.

Thanks, Apple!

I'm starting to dabble more with roasting, but the heatgun method is crude--a machete, like you say. And I think it bakes out the beans somewhat. I might go with a whirl-a-pop. Someone mentioned having good luck with that, early in this thread. Not ready to delve into coffee-roasting machines yet.

Has anyone tried one of those reusable K-cup holders to use your own coffee in a Keurig? Do they work OK? I'd like to move away from buying k-cup coffee and start using my own.

BTW, this is the Clever I mentioned. It sits atop a coffee mug. Insert filter, put in ground coffee, pour hot water over it. Drains into the mug.

I've never done the heatgun or whirly pop. I started with a air popper for a few pounds before getting the behmor, but I don't know that I'd say either of those methods are crude. I know jammin started with and likes the heat gun/bread maker combo. I consider both the heatgun and whirly pop to just be very manual. The real downside to a manual process in my mind is that consistency/repeatability takes some practice and diligence. Just like pourover vs an automatic coffee machine or typical three vessel homebrewing vs something like the the picobrew zymatic. In many cases, you're paying for automation and repeatability more than a genuinely better process. (Although, at the higher end, you're getting both.)

My wife has the reusable k-cup from melitta to use in her office keurig. I don't think she uses it very frequently, but she said initially that it works alright. IIRC, it was also inexpensive enough at the grocery store that even if it only lasted for a couple dozen uses it was still cheaper than k-cups.

I had great results with the whirlypop. However, I got tired of twirling it for 10 minutes, and you really can't stop for more than two seconds or you'll get tipping. I moved to the Behmor for the smoke control and automation and haven't looked back. But for the money, it's tough to beat a whirly or similar.

Regarding reusable k cups, just grind a little finer and it will taste better. The Keurig ratio must be something like 1:22 because it's still watery (I like 1:16 when I'm controlling it) but the finer grind helps make up for it being more watered down.
