    How long would you ferment?

I'm going to be brewing an imperial red that should have around a 1.092 OG. The recipe that I got most of my information from on this style said to ferment for 7 days at 68 degrees. To me, that doesn't seem like nearly enough time for a ~9.5% beer. However, it IS an imperial red which is...

    Three Philosophers mini-score?

I just picked up a 4 pack of on of my favorite quadrupels: Three Philosophers. I picked up the 4 pack of the 2008 brew for 11 dollars. So I got 48 oz of a 3 year aged quadrupel for 11 bucks. I'd say that's a pretty damn good deal. Aside from that mini-score. I was wondering if anyone had...

    Hot Scotchy with tea

Hot scotchy has become one of my favorite drinks lately (hot mash runoffs mixed with scotch pre-boil). I just recently have been making my own tea. I have a keurig coffee maker to heat up my water (and scotch) and then I mix with my tea. Anyone have any good remedies or recipes for this?

    Abnormal Ales

I don't know if this has been posted. But I just came across this today. 10 abnormal beers, using abnormal ingredients. Has anyone ever tried or tried to make any of these? http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/bella/2010/08/abnormal_ales_10_beers_with_we.php

    Bottling my Barley Wine!!!

Hey all I'm bottling my barley wine tonight! I'm adding 2.9 oz of dextrose to prime it and have to wait another 3-8 months (waited 2 already... been dry hopping, etc.). The beer looks great. SG was 1090, and the FG was 1020. It will be ~9.8%. I'm stoked. I'm waiting for the...

    Stainless Steel Mash Tun?

So I saw a 164 quart Igloo cooler at Costco yesterday for ~90 dollars. I went on Amazon to see if I could find something like it for maybe a little cheaper and came across this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004I3VJBO/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Anyone ever use this as a Mash Tun? It seems...

    Odell Brewing Co. Customer Service

Odell Brewing has the best customer service that I have ever dealt with in ANY company, not just breweries. I host a Beerfest Friday's, every Friday. One of my buddies bought an Easy Street Wheat. It turned out to be sour and no one liked it (except for me because I actually like sour ales)...

    Super Brew 15

Has anyone here tried this beer? It's an "Original Barley Wine Ale" imported from Romania. I saw it at the local asian grocery store today and picked it up (I never see good beers there, usually just BMC and everything else they own). It's brewed by S.C. Martens S.A. - Romania - Galati...

Why do people believe in God?

Because beer exists. That's my take on Franklin's quote.

    Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale #1

Saw the recipe for this recently when founder Ken Grossman visited my class. He had a slide show and posted his first 8 or so Pale Ale recipes. I should have wrote it down, but I know the first ingredient was 8 1/3 lbs of LME. I know that it was from Blue Ribbon extract (later called/bought...

    Barley Wine Extract Recipe

I'm posting it because it's almost time to start brewing your fall/winter barley wines. This is an extract brew, let me know how it sounds! It's extremely hoppy, but hop efficiency dies out after a while. 0.5# Chocolate malt 0.5# Crystal 90L 0.5# Rye Malt 45 min steep on those grains...

    Boozeday Tuesday

Who wants to join me? I've been sipping on 3 different Barley Wines since I got off work. Chicken Killer BW - Santa Fe Brewing Co. Gnarllywine - Lagunitas Old Ruffian - Great Divide Brewing Co. I'm a little toasted as I have been sipping on those for a while.. Random tangent...

High Gravity Beer - Blow off tube problem

I am making a barley wine with an approx. 1.108 OG. I have 2 yeast starters going that I made last night. I'm waiting for my girlfriend to finish cooking dinner so that I can have the kitchen to brew. However, when I was waiting, I started playing with my new blow off tube. I tried to put it...

    Cooling wort..

I heard that if you cool your wort in an ice bath with the lid on, you will get tannins. I have also heard that you MUST cool the wort with the lid on to prevent infections. Which one is true? Also if I have a glass lid (instead of stainless steel), would it prevent me from getting tannins?

Just made my first yeast starter...

I think everything went well. I activated the yeast. Then I waited. Next I boiled a cup of DME in about 1/4 gallon of water (I eye-balled the water). Finally, I cooled it, then added my yeast. Only problem was that my rubber stopper was too big for my growler, so I used the aluminum foil...

    High IBU Barley Wine

So I'm going to brew big tomorrow (making yeast starter today). I plugged my DME into a calculator and it should come out to ~10.6% abv. The next thing I did was plug my hops into an IBU calculator. I actually plugged it into 2 calculators. One said it would have 100.65 IBUs, which is ideal...

Just bought a Kegerator... Need your help!

So I bought a kegerator off of craigslist for 100 dollars. This came with a FULL 20 lb Steel CO2 tank, a dual regulator, tap, etc. It also came with a torpedo keg. Can I keg in this? It looks like a commercial keg sort of tap (if that makes sense). How would I go about putting my own beer...

    Meeting With Ken Grossman!

I am a student at Arizona State University and I am taking a 400 level course entitled "The Chemical and Cultural History of Beer." This Saturday kicks off Arizona Beer Week! I am fortunate enough to have a chance with my class to meet Ken Grossman, founder/owner of Sierra Nevada. He is the...
