Spotting scope vs. binoculars

My son moved into a house on the great lakes and can see the ships pass in the shipping lanes. You can see them ok with 10x25 binocs. I am wondering if a15x30x50 spotting scope or a set of 16x50 binoculars would be better for viewing ships and other water activity.

The scope will have better distance on it with the extra lens.

I believe the 16x50 binos would be better. The spotting scope images are going to be pretty dim at extended ranges with that small objective lens. A reflecting telescope might be the best option.
