I have a recently converted fridge for fermenting set to 68F.
If I can find a short airlock, I can have one gallon batches stacked two high. (On one side only. I usually do 5 gallon batches, but have some test meads in the works.
Is there a way to have a jug airlocked without the extra four inches of height? A flexible hose connector, a couple layers of cloth and a rubber band, . . . ?

I had a similar problem and used a blowoff tube in lieu of an airlock. A 90 degree barbed nylon elbow got the tubing headed sideways which helped minimize the height.

Or you can get an s type airlock and cut a few inches of the bottom stem. Leave just enough to stick into the stopper. But that might still leave too much on top....the 90 degree barb/blowoff may just be the thing.
