Technically it's not the Windscale piles which were the first nuclear reactors on what is now the Sellafield site, built after WWII to produce material for atom bombs. But it is the opening by the Queen on 17 October 1956 of Calder Hall, an extension to the site hosting the world's first nuclear reactor producing electricity into the grid, so I'll give it to you.winscale
