I like your style, Dude, but do you have to use so many curse words?

Does my ******** incessant cursing offend you?

  • Yes, I'm very offended!

  • You could stand to keep it clean for all the children we have on here.

  • No, ****** keep it coming!

  • Ah, **** off!

No way. That must have been the only one that thinks that way. Thanks for caring about our feelings though! Sure do wish there was a smile for a group hug about now. JK:D

Actually it turned out that the only reason he was calling me out was because he caught Zee Modhammer for being "too offensive", so he was using me as the "yeah, well, others on here do much worse so leave me be" kind of example. I get it now. At first it seemed odd, though, but yeah, I actually do care if I happen to be pissing off the general forum membership.

I don't walk around cursing, I just like to do it around here, because it's like my own little virtual pub.

Exactly. I pretty much never curse in real life. That's mostly because when I am not sleeping I am either at work or with my wife and kids. HBT is my virtual pub; here I can rant and rave and curse 'till the cows come home and it's usually cool.

I'm goin' to shut the f%ck up now.

It's difficult to ask how offensive you might be without breaking pub character. ;) I applaud your efforts for the good of the forum :)

Well, of course, I don't curse at all. But if I was a cursing sort, it wouldn't offend me.

Um, that is a joke. I have been known to curse, but I'm trying hard to not say the Fbomb in church. I do have my standards.

I'm trying not to say "tits" at the hospital where I work. Like, "Good beer is the tits" is something I'm trying to not say to patients. I know that's not a real "curse" but I do get some blank stares. Particularly in the over 80 year old set.

I remember that now. I thought it was chickensh!t how he did that. It doesn't take too long on this board to realize that you are not being personal (most of the time). I like how you call people out and make them actually think.
BTW - I was joking about being a west coast liberal (just thought I'd tell you so you didn't rip my heart out:D)

I'm F***ing confused; are we talking about voodoo? If thats the F***ing case I curse the whole F***ing lot of ya!

Cursing's not the issue, as far as I'm concerned. I need to remind myself to not drop too many f-bombs in tech forums (or, ****-bombs), but I don't care what words get used in Drunken Ramblings.

The more general issue that needs to be addressed by all - and I would hope those who are guilty of this would know who they are - is what I see as a general decline in the level of civility and respect people get accorded around here. I don't mind an f-bomb, but it seems that people (and there are many, this isn't spoken to any one individual) seem to say stuff that's deliberately designed to piss people off, or just to be a prick. That's not cool.

Nah man, don't go changing who you are because of one or two people..........it's clear that the majority of us anyway don't give a sh*t. I'm sure we'd hate to lose our resident political sh*t-stirrer (watch out for Edwort) -- and I think you could lose some of that effectiveness if you can't say f**k, sh*t, or p*ss. Oh, or c*ck or b*lls.

P.S. I was gonna mix up those asterisks with other crazy symbols, but as it turns out I'm lazy.

Swearing does not f**king offend me in the slightest bit. I spent four years in the US Marine Corps. So I'm not easily offended.

Actually it was in response to another thread that got locked before I could respond where someone called me out for cursing too much. I thought, really? So I just wanted to check. You never know.

I'm sorry Evan!, but your naughty words have offended me, and bruised my eyes (would have been ears, but I didn't hear you type it).

Dude! I have no issues with your language. I only mentioned it as a comparison to my own, and suggested that if I had insulted or offended a person reading that thread, I couldn't figure out why...as my language was no more colourful than yours is, and my comments were no more imflamatory than Ed's :D However I received a written warning for my deeds. Oh well.. live an learn...something..

Now shut the F**K up and drink some beer :mug:

I curse way too much, must be all those years of catholic school. I've had to really watch myself lately with the new job, nobody in my office seems to appreciate the random 9am F-bomb.....

HAHA, yeah... I am a recovering Catholic school survivor as well.

I used to work with a mormon guy. When he got fired up, he would drop a few cuss words, but I told him "you swear at a 3rd grade level". Never heard him say "that guy is a f-er" again.

I do not have kids, don't want any, rarely am around them, so I cuss like a sailor.

I admire Evan!s ability to dish out a verbal (written) a$$-whoopin. I generally agree with his politics, so that probably helps.

I've never understood the fascination with...or the allergic reaction to...a string of letters that really mean nothing.

I had to go back a ways, but was able to find a quote by someone who put it best:

...I curse up a storm under my breath. Doesn't mean I do it out loud around others.

Excessive (out loud) cursing is a sign of the minds inability to rationalize and work through a situation that requires some mental processing...resulting in an eruption of explicatives to induce some immediate sense of relief from the frustration that is brought about by this mental "stall".

In other words, too many out loud F-words means your brain isn't up to speed.

Plus, you sound like a f@rt knocking, Sh!t4Brains, FeckFace when you do it. :D

The sad truth is...excessive swearing makes people look dumb.

I don't think that's the case. You're a *****enozzle and we all know it. :D :p

... pictures not included in quote because they are freaking nasty...

Oh now damnit... THAT offends me. Someone post some eye bleach, quickly!

Here's what I don't understand - Why can someone say - son of a biscuit, Gosh darn, dagnabbit, fudge, etc... without offending anyone? We know what they are saying and actually hear the actual words in our head (at least I do)

Exactly. Say the word Twat over here and people just think you have some syndrome. Say the word out loud over in the UK and you're likely to get escorted out of whatever establishment you happen to be in.

Taking offense at curse words is a learned behavior.

Then again, the incessant use of curse words conveys a lack of vocabulary and inability to articulate. (whether that is right or wrong doesn't matter...it's the perception).

You know those sports interviews you see on TV where the 78 IQ jock keeps peppering his dialogue with "know what I'm sayin?" and "and uh..." and "ummm"...and "well basically..."

Same thing. Curse words are just filler.

****, you'd have to **** all over the whole ****ing place to get me to ****ing care. You're a ****bag, but I put up with your mother****ing ****, anyway. ****** *******.

OK I spit out some beer and had to be picked up off the floor by SWMB(FKN)O.... that $#!T was funny
JJ
Oh and by the way FK-U

They either think we're pissed at each other or they think we have some sort of somethingawful-like culture here and start calling people they don't know a-holes.

Although I do agree with you on sometimes people don't 'get it', I disagree that we're like somethingawful. The other forum I hang out is somethingawful, particularly in GBS. They are much more vicious over there, and their language is rather... hmmm... coarse, shall we say? And don't even get me started on 4chan....

Some people really do overuse the F word. It does seem like it's like a clutch that's not working quite right and needs some time to engage. Now, being able to swear creatively takes talent, rather than just parroting "F this" and "F U" and all that bull****. I like the '************' permutations because it's so versatile. Lately ******-canoe has been my swearword of choice.

That said, screw the lot of you, you knobgobbling thundercu** fu**stick anal nazis!!

You mean you usually talk turkey? :D
Lol :D

I think you summed it up quite well here... Most of it is filler. Along that line of thought it makes sense that a nationality that talks so fast (say in comparison to most of the US accents) would need that bit more filler (i.e. swearing). I'm sure many of ye have met an Irishman and had difficulty not just with the accent but the speed at which we talk...

Unless you've just hit your thumb with a hammer:D
I agree here too though :mug:

Seriously, as the_bird said, it's not cursing that's being commented on. Not really. It's a seeming general lack of respect that is becoming a problem. It's easy for us who "know" each other to give some pretty good (and I think well deserved) insults at each other, just like at our neighborhood pub. But when others come along and read it, they don't know the inside jokes and it looks like it's permissible to have personal attacks and insults in this forum. Of course, those of us who have been around for a while know it's not ok.

When people are warned about their behavior, but then come back with, "But YOU did that", we have to take a look at it.

Ok, now, let's all join hands together and sing "Kum by Yah". I feel all lovey now.
