Has anyone ever used this particular piece?

http://www.homebrewing.org/Weld-less-Thermometer-Accessory_p_4301.html#

I bought this thinking it would be an easy way to use a digital thermometer with my brewpot/hlt. The issue is finding a thermometer that will fit the 3/16" hole, I have also expanded my search to dial thermometers with no luck. I have looked all over the place and can't find one that will work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It almost seems like that was meant for a probe that would ultimately be hooked up to something more automated.
But it does state this in the directions: "Omit small washer if stem is larger than 3/16"." So perhaps email AIH and ask them to point you towards a thermometer that fits.

So taking that washer out let you fit a thermometer? that is good. Also, good call on the plastic cup test. I never thought of that.

No I didn't remove the washer. I just tried a smaller than recommended thermometer and it didn't leak. The only thing the plastic cup doesn't test is how the heat effects it. I guess I could pour boiling water in the cup and see if anything changes.

Looks like a complicated way of achieving this: https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/pcomp4.htm
