It depends on what you think is shockingly expensive. Colorado Scientific sells them in several sizes here: http://secure.sciencecompany.com/Magnetic-Stir-Bars-C701.aspx
They run about five bucks before shipping, but that's lower than I've seen in a lot of other places. FYI CosCo has a lot of cool gadgets and glassware that can be adapted for brewing purposes. I can't walk out of there without dropping $50 or more.

They are so expensive because they are coated in PTFE.
