How long can you store or keep beer? Bottled that is?

I am considering starting homebrewing and trying to learn as much as I can before jumping in... Very confusing with all the different techniques...

The smaller the beer the sooner it needs to be drunk.
Some light beers start going down hill within a few months. Other bigger beers can last years and get better with time.
Most normal beers should generally be drunk in the 3 - 6 month time scale but all beers are different,
A long lost bottle may turn out to be a gem after a year or so or it could be horrible.
