Elderberries in beer, how to use, when to add?

Did some searching and came up null. I'm doing a gruit and want to add some elderberries but don't know how to use them. Any suggestions, times to throw them in, amounts? It's basically going to be my Scottish Wee Heavy recipe (smokey, malty, higher abv) minus the hops and with various spices. I'm adding spruce tips, heather tips, and MAYBE wormwood...but probably not.
 
I know leinenkugels uses elderberries in their BerryWeiss. Maybe dig around for a clone and it would give you some added direction.
