    Crazy hydrometer readings

Okay, I've been doing this long enough that I'm pretty sure I know how to read a hydrometer, but yesterday's session confused me plenty. Reading 2: After honey added (post flameout) 1.040 @ 160F = 1.062 Reading 3: Reading after cooled 1.050 @ 80F = 1.052 How is that possible? I...

    I hate ProMash...

Yes, it's true. It never estimates the infusions correctly, for me at least. It may get you to the first temp, but on a stepped mash it's off by miles. For example: 10.71qts at 141 to get to 128 (yeah, that's fine) 6.52qts at 210 to get to 154? Not a chance, took more like 14 Glad I...

The Unveiling is going ahead as planned, but...

Okay, my new revision of the Glorious Red Sun of Krypton is being unveiled (video/pics to follow) at a monster holiday bash on Sat night. It's been in bottles since Nov 14th and is finally starting to mellow and lose the biscuity taste it had a few weeks ago so that's good, but I made another...

Starter size for a wee heavy?

I've got a recipe with a target OG of 1.091 and I've never done anything more than the standard starter from a WL vial. I'm guessing based on threads I've seen, that I'll need more than the standard for a brew with this target grav? Split a vial and make 2 starters? 3-4 days worth? Thanks -RS

    Pecan Wee-heavy, intrigued, but unsure.

Okay, talking with the wife this weekend and as we picked up several pounds of shelled nuts for the holidays and started thinking about adding pecans to a wee-heavy or something of the sort. How would one go about that? Rack onto some pecans in the secondary perhaps? Quantities? We'll be doing a...

Ever feel like you've hit a slump?

I brewed today for the second time in 3 weeks and after a terrible efficiency 2 weeks ago, I was more on the ball today and had help from some very experienced guys. Last efficiency was 58% and today was under 50. I milled the grains myself at the shop so I can't guess what it is, but we missed...

How to hop this IPA (such as it is)?

5gal, 60% efficiency (may no sparge it and up the grains) Pale malt(2-row) 12.5 Rye malt .5 Carahell malt .5 Crystal 40L .5 Victory malt .5 Flaked wheat .25 Yeast: WLP002 I'd like somewhere in the mid 50s to high 60s...

Flawless Victory - Help me decide style

Okay, I have a brew named Flawless Victory, but in the past it's been a mediocre IPA and I'd like to jazz things up. The idea is a full-flavored brew with a little bite, but not too much. The taste that will make you Finish Him.... Ideas? I'd like to draft up a recipe for brewing a week...

    My worst efficiency ever, 58%

I missed my OG by 10 points, so weak, even the volume was low. First time I've been off and I'm sure why, but ProMash is usually spot on with temps. My infusion was at 165, which I now know is about 5 degrees too high for the new MLT so that's good to know, but my strike water didn't raise...

50qt Mash Tun Build - Writeup inside

Okay, I put this together this morn and my pdf writer is a little screwy, but it works. First draft of the Colossus Mash Tun build. This is using a Rubbermaid Endurance cooler, 50qt. Very nice setup and not too cost prohibitive either. If the server kills the download, let me know. They're a...

    Two Topics in 1! Bugs/pH

I just got some grain today and noticed that they included some bugs free of charge! I don't want to tell them because I might have to pay for them, but how unusual is this? Not weevils mind you, tiny ant-looking buggers. Second, the pH of the water here in Tucson is near 8.0, sometimes more...

    Behold.... The Colossus

Logo is traditionally printed in a metallic PMS bronze or metallic blue. Threw together something for Red Sun... One of my fave brews I'll post some more when I get a little time. Guys dig? -RS

How 'good' a cooler do I need?

I'm building a new, larger MT and I found a 40-qt rubbermaid cooler in the garage. Has a drain hole so that's a plus. Do I need a Maxcold or something of the like or is it not that important? Thanks -RS

No clue what I'm doing Irish Red

Alright, I've been chatting with a friend about an Irish Red and we modified his reasonably successful red from the spring and came up with: Red Sun - Irish Red BJCP Style and Style Guidelines ------------------------------- 11-A English & Scottish Strong Ale, Old Ale Min OG...

Grenading, how much does it take, really

I'm just curious, not that I want to grenade any tasty beverage, but I hear about it often enough that I'm wondering how much priming sugar you'd need to make that happen given standard bottle types. Might be fun to try in a controlled environment....

    No sparge efficiency... and more

Alright, I've made many a partial mash and sparged them of course and also several all-grains now but I learned from someone who doesn't sparge (I use their MLT) so I haven't either. The grain bill goes up, yeah, but the mechanics of the whole thing haven't been real clear to me. I just got...

Yipes, methinks I'm getting old or something

Today I made a PM Honey Hefe that we call Haderach round here with the special lady and we've made it before, just been tweaking a thing or two here and there, but I was lower on OG than expected at 1.048 which wasn't terrible, but I wound up with less wort than expected as well, probably in the...

    Yeast viability at age

Well, I've been waiting on some equipment for a while so my yeasties have been in the fridge waiting patiently and I wondered to myself what the loss in viability is with age. I think the born on date has them at June 7 or so, any ideas when losses start to occur? -RS

    Partial Mashes worth naming?

I'm curious about whether I should bother naming my partial mashes or just the AG. I've done a few AG, but I find myself going PM more and more often just out of simplicity given various time/company constraints. I just don't know if PMs are name worthy. Thoughts?
