    Williams American IPA

Former AG brewer First time brewing since my son was born. He's turning three soon. Made an old extract kit, with fresh yeast, last Monday. OG was 1.066, target was 1.057 but my boil off was higher than I remember and I ended up with 4.5 gallons into the fermenter. A week later and my beer is at...

    Brewing right now

So I'm brewing for this first time in about three years. Just made my first hop addition. I've been sanitizing things while the wort boils and I just found that my auto siphon is full of mold from being in the basement unused. I'm tossing it of course, but how should I transfer 5 gallons into my...

    All Grain with Sorghum

There doesn't seem to be much info out there on brewing with sorghum. Anyone have experience with it? The place I work grew a bunch of sorghum, which we are pressing into syrup. We're clipping the heads off for chicken feed. One of my coworkers eats a gluten free diet, so I was going to snag...

    First all grain

It's about 30 degrees out, but I scored two 15gal aluminum stock pots for $50 this morning so I'm brewing my first all grain batch. Everything is going according to plan thanks to another new toy - beersmith. Just started the boil on a chocolate oatmeal porter...

Hops and when to use them

So I am brewing today. Two 5 gal batches cause it's my birthday and I got a bunch of new gear. First batch is a Fuller's ESB extract clone. Second is a dump of ingredients from past brews and some stuff I grabbed from the LHBS this morning. Pilsen DME, Golden LME, crystal 80, biscuit malt. Hops...

    yeast dilemma

So, I've made a several batches now, but never really fooled with a yeast starter. I've been planning to brew today to use my brand new wort chiller, so last night i took the smack pack out of the fridge and gave it a wallop. I boiled 2qts of water and added 8oz of light DME. Didn't wait for the...

    Brewing palilalia right now

So right now I'm sitting on the porch while grains are steeping in the turkey fryer. The recipe is Papazian's palilalia, and since I'm brewing beer, and drinking beer, i figured i might as well read about beer. A few quick questions though. 1. I got the ingredients a about 2 months ago and...

Hop utilization in a partial boil

I finished reading Charlie P's Complete Joy of Homebrewing earlier this week and place an order with Midwest for ingredients to make Palilalia IPA. I tweaked the recipe just a bit, using beercalculus.hopville.com aiming for his stated 50 IBUs. This morning, I was reading a little more and...

    Homebrew, Take One

I've slowly been making my way through John Palmer's How to Brew and received Charlie Papazian's Joy of Homebrewing for Christmas, which I also have not yet finished. But I've been itching to giving brewing a shot, so I went to my local brewing supply shop the other day and set myself up with a...
