    trusting my software

Not a big deal but I thought it was worth sharing. I was doing a 5 gallon batch of an amber ale. Beersmith call for a total of 8.2 gallons of water (this is to include all my losses until I reach the fermenter). After sparging I still had 72oz of water set aside that did not get used and my boil...

    brewing foul?

Decided to do a night brew last night since the cooler weather has arrived. All appeared to go perfect, until this morning. Some how my floating thermometer broke off the bottom and the lead pellets ended up in boiler. Not sure if any made it into the fermenter. Should I be concerned.

    Equipment Profile Screenshot

Based on the test I did yesterday From boil to cooling the loss was 1.39 total. As stated in a previous post, I lost 1.1 gal during boil and .29 during cooling. In my profile should I just enter 1.39 into the boil off field or the 1.1 and use the percentage to make up the cooling difference(.29)?

    loss calculation

Does this make sense: I did a test. i boiled 5 gallons of water to determine evap loss. I lost 1.1 gallons before chilling and then an additional .29 when cooled. Total loss of 1.39 gallons. If Im going for 6.5 gallon batches does the math 1.39 / 5 = .278 which gives me a per gallon loss...

    IBU' not what expected

Below is a recipe for a Sierra Nevada I'm attempting from a BYO recipe (slightly altered the grain) Below is what I punched into BeerSmith and it only shows IBU's at 18.6? It should be around 37. Does anyone see what I missing from this or something I have inputted incorrectly. This is for a 5...

    Video of Wheat beer fermenting.

This may not be anything exciting, especially for those of you who have been brewing for a long time. But I took short video of a belgian Wheat I just brewed (my 1st AG batch) and how 24 hours later the yeast is just having a party in there! Heres the link. Again I just find this amazing so I...

For my 2nd batch of beer and 1st all grain. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, everything went pretty smooth. I had posted about the recipe before and I made some adjustments according to feedback I received. Heres what I cooked up: 5lbs Pale 2 row 5lbs Wheat malt 1 candi...

    First Brew update!

Hey everyone. Its been 1 week since brew day. I brewed a red ale. So far all is looking good. My OG reading was 1044. Yesterday I checked the gravity and it read 1016. Today I checked and it was still dropping 1009. According to Nottingham it looks like my target is 1008. I will check again in...

    Beginners Blues?

Ok, just attempted 1st batch of beer last night. Here are 2 known mistakes, let me know what you think will be affected. This was for red ale that called for 5lbs of DME and used 6lbs on accident because they were 3 lb bags, in the excitement of every thing I just dumped both bags. I also forgot...

    Mash Tun question

I just constructed a mash tun out of a 5 gallon cooler. I saw a few people used the SS braided hoses for a strainer in the bottom without using a false bottom. Has anyone ever used the nylon braid hose instead of the stainless. Any chance nylon comp would produce off flavors? Thanks
