    Preheating Cooler?

I was wondering. most people here advocate the practice of preheating your cooler tun to prevent gross heat loss when mashing. But even with that practice still recommend heating the water about 10-12 degrees warmer than your intended mash temp. The problem I found when doing my first AG...

    HELP! First AG brew question

i used this recipe today: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f67/nut-brown-ag-30187/ The OG is supposed to be 1.054, but mine only came to 1.040. I had more sparge water than i could use. I was already at 6.5 gallons of wort, so i drained the remaining into a separate pot. Well i boiled the 6.5...

This is probably a stupid question

but i don't deal with these sort of parts on a daily basis, but for the universal 10 gallon cooler conversion project, what size hose do i get that fits with the 3/8" barb adapter?

    New cooler tun question

i posted these two questions on the cooler diy post, but i dont think many people check that area often, and i really wanna know what to do, so i'm posting it here: well i tried this w/ my rectangle 58 quart. first, the ball valve, actually ends up w/ part of it inside the cooler, because the...

    wort chiller necessary?

i've decided to jump right into AG, but was wondering if i need to really spend the extra money for the wort chiller for my first batch or if it can wait. would a huge ice water bath and frequent gentle stirring be enough, or do i truly need the chiller? thanks.

First Planned PM: Please check my Math and Procedures

My conversions are based on the philosophy from: http://home.elp.rr.com/brewbeer/extract/pres.pdf For my first PM I chose Lil' Sparky's Nut Brown Ale (AG recipe) The original recipe is as follows: Recipe Type: All Grain Yeast: Nottingham Batch Size (Gallons): 5.5 Original...

    Final volume?

I look at all the all grain recipes (since i read how to convert them to partial mash recipes), and it never says what the final volume is going to be. Is there any way to tell how many gallons will result from a said recipe?

    All Grain Mash Supplies

what do you need, at MINIMUM (trying to save money, and with links to DIY projects to make your own, to make an all grain batch (other than ingredients). Still trying to see if i want to go all grain after being gone for a long time, or just do PM first to get myself used to the process again...

    Re-Hello from Newfield, NY

I used to be a part of this community, but it's been so long, that I probably need to reintroduce myself. Anyway, when I was here before my family and I still lived in CA. We moved here to the Newfield in the Finger Lakes region of NY, to pursue our dream of owning our own winery one day...

    Some extract questions

im pasting the below, because i'm too lazy to type it again LOL I was going to start again with partial mash, but just in case I don't I wanted to ask some questions to refresh my memory with the extract side of things. The first two extract/specialty grain beers i made were kits, so...

    Some PM Questions

Hey all. Most probably don't know me, but I'm back from almost 2 years of being gone. Anyway, with the temps cooling here in upstate NY soon, I was thinking about taking up brewing again for fun. The problem is it's been so long, and been so far from my everyday thought process that I've...

I wish I could use my garage.

I'm cleaning it out this weekend, so it'll be nice and empty again soon. It would be perfect as my personal brewery, but its not temperature controlled in there. In the winter it can get to be mid 30's at night, while in summer it can easily climb to 100+ during the day. Poor insulation...

    Labeling Questions

Basically...how do you do it? Are you guys just using photoshop? Are you printing on paper and just gluing it on, or are you fitting it to fit on something like an avery label adhesive label? Is there some label making program out there?

    Speaking of my 3rd Batch

I came home this afternoon after work, to check on my latest batch (the honey wheat beer), and surprisingly no more bubbles. I brewed it late sat. nite, and sunday morning through this morning it was bubbling at about two bubbles per second, now all of a sudden nothing. I cracked open the...

Why are my brews coming out dark?

I mentioned this in the recipe thread, but i dont think the same people here would see it. My first batch was an English Pub Ale, came out medium brown, so thats fine. Second batch was an Irish Stout, that came out black/very dark brown, so that's fine. but this weekend i made a batch of...

    The worry/concern begins anew

LOL. So I got home and the bubbling had slowed down to one every 40, so i decide i should rack it, because its been exatly 7 days anyway. I open the bucket, and the tell tale signs of being done are all there. No krausen, the dark residue on the sides of the bucket where the krausen steadily...
