    Straining the wort Good idea????

For what reasons i had i strained my wort through a 200 micron sieve on brew day. It's the sieve i use from my honey extraction. OG was 1.080. Going into the secondary SG was 1.024. I just bottled it and the FG was 1.022. i've never seen a clearer beer! ('Monk's Blood' clone btw). There...

    *WARNING* Stupid thermometer mistake

I can't believe i did this! I work in research for God's sake! CHECK THE CALIBRATION ON EVERY THERMOMETER YOU USE! I don't like the stem thermometers so i got a dial version. Why i never checked it against the mercury one i can't explain. I found out it was 8 degrees off (low) during a...

    Lowest temp for top-off water

What is the lowest temp the top-off water an be? I had real trouble keeping my fermenter below 72 degrees this summer. If i can chill the top-off water then maybe the heat from the initial fermentation will stay below the 72 degree mark. I did use a fan & water bath (guess I'll add ice to...

    Each bottle tastes different?

Now drinking the first batch i bottled. Not great, Maybe not good, but OK. Fine. Most of it has that slight band-aid after taste. My Question is this. 'How come every couple of bottles I get one that has no off flavors?' In fact it's real good stuff. I don't understand how...

Two things I've learned While Bottling...

They are... 1). - Homebrew taste GREAT when drank at 60°F to 70°F! 2). - Homebrew taste GREAT when still unconditioned & green! Also, I just secondaried an Oktoberfest that I could easily start drinking RIGHT NOW! Fortunately I can wait long enough for it to get even better.

    Slight boilover

I didnt have the ice cubes sitting out. Had to run and get a handful. Batch boiled over only a little bit. Like maybe two cups worth of foam on the stove top. Will that affect the batch? The target OG is 1.052 - 1.056 and my batch came in at 1.056. It's an Oktoberfest kit.

What to do with the yeast?

I just bottled my first batch of beer. I have a primary with all the yeast in it. Is there something i can do with it, other than throw it away?
  16. BRUbaker

    Rousing the yeast?

So rousing the yeast, in a fermentor, with the slightest twist of the bucket WILL NOT harm the brew? Or cause an off flavor?

What can I do with this Oktoberfest Lager kit?

I was given a Brewer's best German Oktoberfest LME kit as a gift. It's a lager but i don't have a fridge or temperature controlled area to make it in. It's from out of state so i cant return it either. Is there something i can do with it to make some sort of an Ale instead? Thanks

Should I stay or should I go....

Background: First batch, 5 gallon Scottish ale LME kit, went in plastic fermentor last Saturday (1/1/11) with a OG of 1.036 and a little unstrained trub. Situation: Two award winning mentors differ in recommendations. -One says direct bottle in two weeks. -Other says use secondary...
