Tap Handles in the style of mechanic wrenches?

A couple of us here at work are wanting to put an open end and wrench and a box end wrench as tap handles on our shop's kegerator. Anyone ever see this style of handle floating around? I've searched but haven't been able to find any tap handles like this. We might have to just make our own...

Beer still green? I hate asking such a noob question.

(I think Revvy recently said that 1/4 of his posts are on this very subject.) My hefeweizen has only been racked for about 2.5 weeks. Tonight I go to taste a bottle. At first, I was struck with an odd, sour smell. The taste was kinda flat, kinda watery, and again, kinda soured. The only...

    Aerating beer when bottling?

From what I've read, if you get too much air in your beer while transferring into your bottling bucket, it could lead to...? Is is oxidation? If so, what are the effects on the batch? If it's just off flavors, how long until you pick up on these flavors? Lastly, is there anything I can do...

Erdinger bottles - Standard caps and capper?

I tried a test cap on a Erdinger bottle and it just wanted to grip funny. The bottle was cocked a little and everything just required a little more attention than normal to make sure that the cap went on straight. Everything LOOKED normal afterwards. Anyone have any experience with...

Someone gave me kegs... and I don't know what to do

(and no, you can't have them.) My Chief at work has given me some of his old homebrew equipment. The 3 big items that can still be used are a 5 Gal carboy and 2 kegs. Thing is, I don't exactly know what to do with the kegs. I don't even know enough about kegging to have an idea about what I...

Is a stained bottling bucket bad?

Yesterday I started prepping everything inorder to rack my batch. While cleaning everything I notice that my bottling bucket has a small circular pink stain in the bottom of it. There is also a matching stain on the inside of one of my short racking hoses. Apparently, while in storage these two...

When to take first gravity reading?

When I take my first reading, do I do it right before I pitch my yeast or right after? I don't know if the yeast would make a difference, except that when I DO take another reading a week or two later, the yeast is obviously in the batch. Thanks in advance for answering such a rookie question.

Adding Pasteur Champagne yeast to Hefeweizen wheat beer.

Dumb question, I know, but I'm gonna ask it anyway. First though, I brewed my 3rd batch of beer Friday night and, without making a starter, pitched my liquid yeast when the wort MAY have been too hot. Now, almost 3 days later, I see no signs of fermentation. I didn't take my first reading...

Petty question: I didn't thin my beer out, did I?

I'm guessing that all will be well, but when I began boiling my wort I lost a fair amount of water. Started with 2 gallons in the kettle but a good bit boiled off between my grain bag and my hops. I put on another pot of water and after it began to boil, added it to my wort, giving me probably...

    First batch is a success!!!

Ok, my beer has only been racked for 5 days now, but I just couldn't wait to try it. It's a wheat ale that fermented in the primary for 9 days (lhbs suggested 7-14 days). Nothing fancy; just a general beginner's recipe. I chill a bottle in the fridge for 3 hours, pop the top and pour it into...

Few scratches in primary lid: Chunk it?

Today I started cleaning my primary bin after racking my first batch. Before thinking about it, I'd grabbed a brush from the kitchen sink and went to town on the lid. Opps, I see scratches now. Now the scratches are small, and again it's the primary LID and not the bucket itself. This...

    Cleaning seal for primary lid

I'm giving everything a good Oxiclean scrub today after Saturday's racking, and I was wondering if I needed to remove the seal in the lid of my primary during this cleaning. Will soaking the lid with seal in place suffice?

Should I expect exploding bottles? (kinda long)

Last night I racked my first batch. It was a wheat ale that my lhbs called their house wheat. When I bought the DME, kit, instructions etc, I was given 5 oz of corn syrup for priming. Everything's rocking pretty smoothly (considering it's my first brew) and, like I said, I begin priming and...

    NE Alabama here

I've already posted on here a few times. Thanks to all for the tips, pointers, answers, etc provided by everyone. I work for Uncle Sam, and after my first trip to Germany I fell in love with the local ware. After hearing me complain about the amount of work that I WASN'T expecting with...

    Too soon to bottle?

First batch has been resting in the pantry for 7 days now, but I've noticed that for the past 2 days (maybe even 3) my blowoff tube/airlock has been burping air only around once every 45 seconds. Real consistent. Kinda plateaued there. Will my fermentation totally cease before I move on to...

Quick question about opening bucket lid during fermenting

Per our local homebrew store, I kept the lid of my bucket cracked for the first couple of days of fermenting. About 36 hours after pitching my yeast I saw a lot of foam/krausen coming from the edge where the lid wasn't sealed. So I took the lid off and cleaned the bucket rim and the lid's...

Noobie here - What's this illness called?

Over the years I've found that some of my hobbies secretly held hidden illnesses and sicknesses that ALWAYS had the potential to have "adverse affects" on me. For instance, for RC airplanes we had AIDS (Airplane Induced Divorce Syndrome) and for music we had GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome...
