New Orleans for St. Patricks Day

So I have never been to New Orleans. I have a business trip that will land me there for the weekend. Any suggestions on what I should check out?

    Fixing a Bad Beer

I made 10 gallons of a white ipa. I used 1050 American ale yeast with a big starter. I think the starter may have been compromised. No 3 hours after pitching you could smell the funk. It was in an active fermentation for two weeks. The beer tastes like it smells. You could probably drink it but...

    Fresh Green Simcoe Hops

I have 5 pounds of fresh simcoe hops left. We bought 10 pounds and some of the guys backed out of the buy. I have had them sealed in a fridge since they arrived last Wednesday. The ratio is 5:1 against pellet. They need to be used sooner than later and I don't know if I can use them all. PM...

RGIII to DC Baby! Was it worth it?

Really though, 3 1st rounders seems a bit steep. I think the gamble will ultimately pay off as their stinginess has given them a tremendous snout of cap space to surround him with some class act weapons.

    Is it wrong?

So my 2 year old had surgery today. I was there start to finish. Went to.work for a few hours and spent the rest of the day helping SWMBO at the hospital with our little one. Had to get home to tend to the big one and get her to bed. I'm now into a full bore brew session to maximize my time and...

    Food Saver for Yeast Storage

There's plenty of chatter about hop storage with a food saver but what about yeast? I have a pretty good unit that seals liquids and thought it might make a good vessel to store yeast. What might be some pros or cons to using sealed bags vs vials or mason jars.

Any brewers in the Bristow/Manassas Va area?

I have found a few clubs in Northern Virginia however I was looking for a group or club or associate to compare and contrast with in my area. Didn't know where to start so I thought I would throw it out there.

    beer gun naysayers

Holy crap! I just used my blichman beer gun this evening and all I have to say is WOW! Easy fill, easy clean up, and a fraction of the time. I know there are some non believers but this was a really positive experience. SWMBO was actually surprised I was finished bottling. Great piece to have.

    Questions on RIMS brewing basics

I just can't find a simple answer. I have almost completed my single tier brewstand with a direct fire RIMS. (I will post the build when it is done ) How do you sparge with a RIMS? I have figured I would use the total water amount for mash and sparge and just up the temps after the inital mash...

    Kegglebrewing. com

Has anyone had any issues with these people? I went to purchase a few small items; coupler, valve, and some hose and was quoted over $50 shipping for ground freight! Doesn't seem right to me. I would like to hear some positive experiences before I pass judgment.

    Repitch?

I brewed a double IPA last week with a starting gravity of 1.75 I pitched a wyeast American Ale yeast that has been in the closet for 6 months. I did not use a starter. It has been 7 days and the gravity is @ 1.55. This seams too slow. I am a little concerned about mold. I have another IPA that...

    Bad Smack Pack? Repitch?

I brewed a Midwest Supplies Simcoe Select IPA (All Grain) on Sunday. The Smack Pack I received with the kit was already swollen when I took it out of the box to "activate" it. I decided to cut the bag open, pour the yeast into a sterilized glass bowl, cut the nutrient bag inside, pour it into...

Has anyone ever melted a better bottle?

Racked the IPA to the keg, filled the 6 gallon BB with hot water to soak the krausen, cover the top with a rag, and walked away. I later found the rag sucked halfway into the BB and the entire transition from the sides to the neck had flattened out completely. I'll try to post a pic but I think...

    "Carbonator" pressures?

I finally received my Carbonators yesterday. I set up a two litre bottle of my kegged brown ale for a party tonight. It's already carbed so I don't want to "over" carb the beer. I filled the bottle to 15psi with about three inches of head space. The bottle still feels a bit squishy. Who uses...

    Going to the beach

The family and freinds are going to the outer banks for a week. I have some beer that is bottled but I have some in kegs as well. I would like to take some of my kegged beer but don't want to go through the hassle of building a "beer gun". Has anyone had any luck with the "Carbonator" from...

Holy Crap!! That's a lot of Wort!

I just think the instructions are incorrect. As I sit here enjoying a beautiful June afternoon, brewing away, I am questioning the volume of wort I am currently bringing to a boil. Here's what we have: Midwest Simcoe Select IPA 10lbs Golden Promise 16oz Crystal 50/60 8oz Carapils 80z...

    Better Bottle Cleaning Issues

I used a six gallon Better Bottle as the primary for my Flat Tire. I kegged it last week. The ale sat in the primary for almost five weeks. I was reasonably successful cleaning it with the exception of a thin line of crusted krausen. The bottle has been soaking for a week in the sun as well as...

    Low pressure keg leak

I have successfully force carbed two batches. One of my kegs leaks when below about 15psi. As I am new to the keg, I did not use the keg lube on my seals. The kegs are recently purchased from Midwest and the seals are new. Without contaminating the beer, can I take apart the leaking parts (ball...
