Strange taste in my most recent mead.

So I just tasted my just most recent "experimental" batch of mead. It was suppose to be an orange and vanilla mead, but it tastes nothing like the intended flavors "orange nor vanilla", instead it tasted like straight alcohol (which is expected from a champagne yeast), with no flavors...

    Worm like thing in beer.

Beer was from "Merchant du Vin - Specialty Beer Importers Since " was suppose to be gluten free ale (buddy was trying different beers to find out was was making his stomach upset) and thought it might be some strange thing with gluten.

    Worm like thing in beer.

So the last update I have is that the brewery wanted to know the "best by " date on the bottle and the batch number. That tells me their initial comment that its yeast is total BS. I haven't heard anything definitive yet, I will keep you guys posted if I find anything.

    Worm like thing in beer.

I'm not sure if its allowed or not, hence why I cropped the label out of the picture. They are only communicating to my buddy who got he beer via email at this time.

    Worm like thing in beer.

This was a commercial beer, not a home brew so I REALLY hope its not.

    Worm like thing in beer.

The second picture is out of the bottle, but same liquid from in the bottle. That was in the bottom of his glass.

    Worm like thing in beer.

I also thought it was a tape worm, he asked the about this second picture and asked if this was also "brewers yeast", now they want to take it off a public forum. They replied "Could you please send us an e-mail with the best-by date from the label? (We can share correspondence easier with the...

    Worm like thing in beer.

Have any of you guys ever seen a worm like thing in your beer? Buddy got this in his the other day. The manufacturer stated "This is brewer's yeast. " But of all the ciders I have made, and all the beers I have ever drank; I never encountered anything like it.

Cider foamed into airlock, now what?

Personally I use an airlock, and can see reasons not to but the way I look at it is simple. I tend to leave most of my ciders in primary for about a month, if there is an infection that batch is trash and I start over. If I had to waste 20 seconds when I stirred (which I don't) that's well...

Fifth season is the only one in Charlottesville now that I know of. Great people in there very willing to help new guys, and they have a couple that are experienced brewers.

    noob Cider questions

Phug, it was my first batch and was so simple its no big deal about repeating. I am going to try many of the various recipes on here prior to experimenting with my own. Yeah the three is not a huge deal on time, I planned on freezing it to concentrate it anyway. Just not sure when its "done"...

    noob Cider questions

Update: 5 gal seems to be nearing the end of its fermentation only a week or so in. (checked Saturday was at 1.004) would you guys consider this "done"? I did not take a OG reading, was my first batch and was like "YAY I make cider!!" I do plan to back sweeten, and then bottle pasteurize...

    Woodchuck Barrel Select Reserve Clone

I know this is an old post, but I tried the woodchuck and loved it, wanted to know how this turned out. Might have to put this on my list of ciders to try.

Panache, what have you been working on? Im mostly ciders, and will eventually move towards meads/cysers; the beers are still a little daunting to me.

    noob Cider questions

    1. I don't think it would be a 1:1, but I would assume that it would have less sugars to convert due to the smaller volume so it would take less time. I halved every ingredient except the yeast, used a champagne yeast, which I was told would not carry much if any flavorings. 2. I might have...

    noob Cider questions

So I have 2 batches going at the moment(first and second batches). 1) With smaller batches is the time in the first fermentor going to be shorter, I would assume it would, but would like to make sure. I am trying a run of apple jack recipe but did a 2.5 gal batch instead of 5 Gal. 2)...
