    Where to get corn?

I've been using flaked maize in my early mash attempts, but I'm sure that's not what most distillers use. I've read most people use dent corn, but I'm not sure where to get a significant qty of it. I think a 50# sack should last me quite a while.

    Question about Column/Efficiency

I built an 8 gallon still with a 36" tall column, 2" diameter (IIRC). Last run I measured about 60% or so. My limited googling shows this is normal range for Pot Still. I kind of expected a bit higher proof just due to the column height. Now I ain't complaining. I planned to make mostly...

    Condenser question

I have an 8 gallon still with a tall column, a 80 degree arm, and a copper pipe condenser jacket coming down at about a 45 degree angle from the arm. The condenser is a 3/8" copper tube inside a 1/2" copper tube. Water jacket. Anyway, the last time I ran it (3rd time) there was still some...

Michigan Selling my Electric Brewing parts Reed City, MI

Decided to downsize and now have a Mash and Boil system for my mostly 2.5 Gallon batches. That means I don't need my OTHER electric stuff that's just in the way in the garage. I'm parting it all out. For now I'm posting some of the bigger items. I'll add some of the small electronic stuff...

The dog is panting. Storms coming.

She's getting up in years, but has been afraid of storms for a long time. I guess her hearing is quite good because she can warn us of rain or thunder about an hour before we hear it. Poor thing. Kept me up half the night last night!

    Champagne Chicken

I feel like posting the recipe again. We are having friends over and they insist that I cook it for them. Here goes: Chicken breast. Or Tenderloins. Slice breast in half so they are thinner if you wish. Personal choice. Lay down some Olive Oil and a TBSP or two of butter in a pan and get...

    I blame Forged in Fire...

I've been interested in knifemaking since I was a kid. The idea of hammering hot steel into a functional (dangerous) weapon seemed cool and a bit taboo. Lately I've found a show called Forged in Fire on History Channel. It's a relatively drama-free reality game where 4 contestants compete...

Reduction of 2" SS to Copper for condenser

I am making a 2" column from some SS pipe I found in a scrapyard. It's going up about 18", over 12" and then down about 4". From there I need to decide how to reduce to 3/4" or so Copper and condense it. Should I be looking for a 2"x ?? SS reducer and weld it on? or would it be better to go...

    Diacetcyl

So Brewed an Amber the other day and it turned out very buttery. At first I thought it was just the excess caramel malt, maybe the copper malt I got from NHC. I needed a beer to submit to a club competition as an "Autumnal Seasonal Beer" so when I got home last night I hot steeped some...

    Backwoods Bastard

It's out. I got some. It's good. I planned to check out the nearby craft beer bottle shop, but surprisingly I found it on the shelf at my local grocery store! Trying to decide if I should spend the money on another 4-pack...

    Backsweeten beer?

Brewed an Amber last week and wanted it to be full bodied and kind of sweet so I could oak and bourbon it and get a fall beer I could enjoy. Well, it turned out a bit too bitter and not sweet at all. I doubt oaking it at this point is going to make it a tasty beer, so I wonder what I can...

    Burner Advice

So I'm building a new brew rig. It's a more portable BIAB style steel frame rig with a mast and arm for hoisting the bag, than can pivot away to drip into another container if desired, integrated burner, comes apart and can pack into a small package to either fit better in the garage, or fit...

    No caffeine free Mountain Dew??

I have a caffeine sensitivity, so I prefer not to drink too much of it. I've been looking for caffeine free Mountain Dew for a while now and can't find it. Looks like they don't even make it anymore! WTH? Used to be you could find it in 2 liters at least. And no, I don't want a diet...

    Exercise

Blah. I had a reasonably steady exercise program last year. Most days I'd use some handy freeweights or eliptical machine at the gym and also bike/powerwalk (I hate running on a machine.) for 30-45 minutes. I wasn't a big fan of it. I don't like exercising for the sake of exercising, but...

    Sauerkraut question

I've made sauerkraut before. It's turned out great sometimes, not very good others. In all cases, I've shredded the cabbage and added layers of salt to it in the crock, and pounded a bit with the bottom of a wine bottle or bomber to drive the salt into the cabbage and pack the cabbage down...

What to do with overly large Zucchini?

Went to Chicago for a long weekend and neglecte to tell my daughter to water the garden and pick fruit. As a consequence, we have several very large Zucchini. Probably got large seeds inside them. Any ideas on how I can use them deliciously? The best idea I got is to cut in half...

    Almazan Kitchen Videos...

So the family and some other friends went to a friend's house to party this weekend. One of my friends tuned me into this YouTube cooking channel called Almazan Kitchen. It's basically a guy cooking mostly in the woods over open fires while another guy films it. There is no talking, no...

    Beer Glass Shelves?

When I was young, I had a small shelf unit in my room for books. When I grew up (er, older....) I had to buy 2 much bigger shelves for my books, and I relegated that shelf to storing my beer glasses. Well, now that shelf unit is too small for my needs. We keep ALL Shaker Pints in the...

RIP Roger Moore, AKA James Bond I grew up with

http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/23/entertainment/roger-moore-dies/index.html He was the first bond I knew as a kid. I didn't see much of his work after that, that I can recall. I don't think I could easily forget him as Bond, and thought it might ruin the movie.

How to get rid of moles

For years I've enjoyed watching the molehills pop up across the road. Now, for a few years, they have enjoyed tunneling under MY yard! I need to find an effective way to kill them without poison. I have cats and can't be sure the moles won't get caught and eaten by the cats. I have one...
