    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

I'm sure this has been covered before but feels easier to ask than trawl through 170 pages. A question about liquid yeast when fermenting 1 gallon: do you pitch the whole pack or split it somehow? Using a whole pack seems like an overpitch and given the cost, I assume you'd want to ferment...

    Hello from Hillbilly Brewery, Sweden

They have oil so Norwegians are the Beverly Hillbillies.

    One Gallon Batch Yeast

I tape it shut and store it in the fridge, never had a problem. Just spray some Starsan on the packet before you cut it open again.

    Grains have started to sprout

Sprouts were pretty dry, so guess it happened in the malting process. Was just curious as it's the first time I used whole grains (base malt at least) and have never come across people talking about sprouts in the various forums I visit. Anyhoo, just chilled the wort, numbers were spot on and...

    Grains have started to sprout

Apologies if this has been covered before but the search only led me to malt your grain threads. This morning as I was milling my grain (Optic pale ale) for today's brew I noticed right at the end that a few of the grains had sprouted, i.e. germinate I guess. A quick look in the grain bag...

    Greetings From South Africa

I grew up down there and my parents still live in KZN. What's the brewing scene like in SA? I gather a fair few small breweries have opened up, but it just seems impossible imagining anyone drinking anything other than Castle. Anyway, welcome and brew on, my china.

coopers kit and some other leftovers.

Do a partial boil with some of the DME, add some flavour hops (depends on your preference) and boil for 15-20 minutes. Throw in some aroma hops and whisk in the rest of the DME. Cover and leave stand for a few minutes. Add to bucket, add Coopers can contents, stir and top up to the level...

    Beer bottle dynamite :(

You have all the advice you need about priming and avoiding bottle bombs but a word about PET bottles. I use the Coopers 500ml brown PET bottles and they work fine. Get a bag of replacement caps as they do wear out after a lot of use. The bottles themselves are hard to clean though. Yeast tends...

Grain Bill to Highlight Yeast Strain

I would stick to base malt, maybe a 50/50 split between pale and pilsner malt. Bittering hops only for 20-25 IBUs. That's it. Catch the right yeast and you should have a nice pale ale.

    French Siason

Consider using Safale T-58. It's a dry Belgian yeast that isn't overly Belgian but does throw some peppery esters.

    BIAB Parti-gyle (1 gallon batches)

Yeah, I was just curious if it was even possible doing full volume BIAB. For anyone interested, I just bottled the small beer. Despite all the hassles I had with getting the brew into the fermenter (original mash on Friday, didn't pitch yeast until Sunday lunchtime) it turned out very nice. I...

The "We'll fix your label for you" thread

Thanks, but not quite what I'm looking for. Have decided to go with this after seeing the other thread with the seal/label generator. Thanks again though.

The "We'll fix your label for you" thread

I'd like the pint glass to be in the same style as the radiation symbol, basically I want my labels to look like warning signs

The "We'll fix your label for you" thread

Anyone interested in helping me design a template for a label? What I'm looking for is something similar to the attachment, but it should say 'DANGER' and the picture should be a pint glass instead of the radiation symbol. There should then be enough clear space for me to include the name of the...

Wort sat for 2 days before boil

Exact same thing happened to me last weekend. I had the added bonus of having to put my kettle outside as the missus did not want a pot full of wort in the kitchen. Took a reading after the mash and before the boil (48 hours between the two) and the gravity hadn't changed. Even if beasties have...

    Conan Yeast Experiences

I am now on day 10 of my first attempt with Conan. The krausen is still chunky and covers pretty much the whole of the surface. I started to get a bit concerned so just took a quick sample for a reading. Took my all DME Amber beer from 1.051 to 1.010 so no attenuation issues. The beer is crystal...

    BIAB Parti-gyle (1 gallon batches)

The brewing gods have called me on my hubris. I've just realised I don't have a clean fermenter for the second beer. I have a batch I can bottle so no biggie. But I also have 1 litre over of the imperial stout as I like to leave that in the kettle with the hop junk. If I strain the remaining...

    BIAB Parti-gyle (1 gallon batches)

Update: The imperial stout is now in the fermenter and yeast is pitched. OG of 1.094. I also pulled the grains out of the cooler and the second/small beer is at 1.026 which would boil down to 1.039 according to Beersmith, which would be spot on for a mild.
