    Did I ruin my brew?

I did the exact same thing on my very first brew. The beer turned out just fine. If there was a problem the beer didn't last long enough for me to notice it. I drank that first batch pretty quickly!

    Head collapses quickly

I'm pretty new as well but I can tell you some things people are going to ask/suggest. First of all what was your recipe? Things like crystal malt, carapils, wheat, and a lot of hops effect head retention in a good way. Also, how big was the batch and how much priming sugar did you use? How...

    Hobbit Brew?

It wasn't really anything special, just a pretty standard ESB. The only thing LOTR about it was the name. I find this whole thread very interesting though.

    Northern Brewer extracts

I've been very happy with their extracts. They have a high turnover so you know that they are fresh. I made a very good beer with their pilsen extract and a great one with their organic light. I also made a very bad beer with their light malt extract but that was no falt of theirs :cross:

Is there a style you can say you do not like?

I'd hate to discount an entire style but I've been trying hefes for years and have yet to find one that I truly enjoy. I can of course appreciate what the brewer is trying to accomplish. I guess I just don't care for all of the banana and clove flavors in my beer. We all have different tastes...

    What size carboy?

I live in an apartment and I can't boil the full volume required for a 5 gallon AG batch. I've done a couple of PM batches so far and I've enjoyed the process. I am interested in trying to make some 3 gallon AG batches. How big of a carboy do I need to allow enough head room for a 3 gallon...

    Commercial Scottish Ales in US

I'm not sure if you can get Founders in your area or not but their wee heavy, "Dirty Bastard" is great.

    Brewing with friends

I'm hoping to do what Colorado said, start splitting batches with my buddy. He is really interested in brewing himself someday. I'd love to be able to split batches with him. This way I could afford to brew more often and get the experience of brewing different styles. SWMBO does enjoy...

    Brewing with friends

There isn't really a point to this post aside from seeing if others feel the same way. I am still new at this and brewed my 6th batch (a honey porter) today. Up until this point I've brewed all of my batches by myself, or with my SWMBO in the other room. I have a friend who has been...

    Am I safe to bottle?

I went to bottle my fifth batch today and was in for a surprise. When I opened my primary bucket there still appeared to be a bit of a krausen on top of the beer. I didn't do a secondary and left it in the primary for 3.5 weeks. I know that is a long time for primary, but I got busy, couldn't...

My ESB, false bottoms & dry yeast

Would you care to share the recipe for your O'fest style ale? I am planning on making something of that nature within the next week or two. I'm doing PM not AG, but your recipe could give me some ideas. Thanks.

Is my hose okay to use?

Thanks everyone for your advice. From what most have said I should be okay. I'll be sure to be careful about sanitation. As many of you said hoses are cheap. I plan on replacing the hose as soon as I can. I just wondered if it would be okay to get me by. It is just that I am very busy...

Is my hose okay to use?

I plan on bottling a beer in a couple of days. Yesterday I just happened to take a look at my syphon hose. It isn't clear like it always was before, it is somewhat cloudy/foggy. When I last used it about a week and a half ago I ran a star san solution through it and then put it away. I know...

    How to filter out grain

I did use a nylon bag for the partial mash, but I think the one I chose was too coarse. Next time I need to choose a finer mesh. I mashed in a 5 gallon beverage cooler, I guess I could invest in a false bottom. Thanks for the advice. I'll try the straining bag over the end of the hose...

    How to filter out grain

Hello everyone, I am very new brewer and I am wondering if I can fix a mistake. For my third batch I tried doing a partial mash for the first time. Long story short I ended up with a pretty good amount of grain particles in my wort. Right now it is happily fermenting away. I was wondering...

    Hello Everyone

Hi everyone, I just joined the forum and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Steve and I just starting brewing my own beer in the beginning of May. I have been into craft beer for about three years. I turned 21 in May '04 and my curious nature led me to learn more about beer...
