    Sanke HLT to Electric

That's a bummer. What are the dangers involved in heating it up. From my understanding it works just like a hot water tank.

    Sanke HLT to Electric

I currently have a propane powered Sanke HLT that I would like to convert to electric. The main reason I want to do this is so I can set it on a controller that would have my HLT at strike temp by the time I get home. Is this realistic? Can somebody point me in the direction of a simple build...

    High Gravity Yeast Experiment

I made a beer with an OG of 1.12. When I was finished I had way more wort than I needed, so I did a little experiment. I intended to ferment the whole batch on WLP099 so I made an appropriate starter for 5 gallons. I ended up with and extra 2.5 gallons. Not wanting to be wasteful, I pitched some...

    Foamy Randall Pour

That's kind of what I'm thinking. I like how Blichmann shows a video of how to use it and gets a perfect pour. That's a little misleading.

    Foamy Randall Pour

Just got a Blichmann Hop Rocket and I'm getting a lot of foam. I added 3oz of leaf hops and hooked it up to the keg with a Cobra tap to pour from. It's sitting in my kegerator so everything is nice and cold. The fist few pours were nothing but foam and I kept pouring until it was purged...

    Hop back/ Hop Rocket question

If the oils disolve into the solution of beer, will that increase the flavor and decrease aroma? Or, the opposite. I stilll haven't made a beer with a great hop aroma punch yet. I've dry hopped, late additions, major steep. For some reason, the aromas just don't come through very well for me.

Best way to add fruit to secondary?

I used a bucket for the secondary. Freeze the fruit, chop it up, throw it in the bucket and rack on top. Put a Nylon mesh bag in the bucket (think BIAB) and it will be much easier to rack into a keg or get the fruit out. I've been doing this with strawberry with great results.

    Finally got a conical!

Nice! I just started using a conical. Ferm temps do seem to get a little warmer in the conical than in a carboy for some reason. I have have a Pale Ale with a nice banana flavor now because of it. Now I want to build a fermentation chamber for it. It's funny how this hobby can spiral out of...

Dry hopping and cold crashing help

I've only bottled from a force carbed corny, but I'm interested in your cooler. What is that sock above it? Can you tell us more about that? I have made some really great, clear beers and I've never "cold crashed". I've moved the fermentor into a slightly cooler area, I've used gelatin, but...

    keezer fan.

I don't think paint would make much of a difference. When mine goes from room temperature to freezing, it does get warm but after that its just maintaining temp and doesn't get warm at all.

    Multi-fruit Beer

I've made a couple of strawberry beers that turned out really well. I used 6lbs of frozen strawberries in 5 gallons. I made a base ale recipe. Then, transferred the beer on top of the chopped fruit. The last time I did this, I put a sanitized mesh bag in the bucket first and this really helped...

    Fruit beer question - Preserves

No. I would be worried about any additives in the preserves and the sticky mess left behind.

    honey in beer

What about adding it in the secondary. Let the yeast finish and get them out, then drop the honey in?

    Thought on this IPA recipe.

When I first started writing my own recipes for some reason I felt compelled to use crystal malts. The more I step away from them, the cleaner my malt profile is, which is what you want in an IPA. If your just adding it for color, 60 is really dark and you'd be surprised how much a small amount...

West Sixth start up brewery being sued by Magic Hat parent company over logo

I don't know anything about either one of these breweries but there are some similarities in the two logos. What pisses me off is, out here there is a general respect and fellowship among the micros. Micros aren't competing wih other Micros as much as they could be competing with the big three...

How long will brew last in secondary?

With every dilemma there is opportunity. Dry hop it! Seriously, I don't think one week will make much difference.

    What does oxidation taste like?

Sometimes if I pull mine off the yeast too fast it will have an alcoholic bite that mellows out wih time. I had some chemical taste in my beer that had to do with a bad hose I was using to fill my kettles.

    Lowes Igloo Mash Tun

That's the cooler I use. I did my own conversion: male to male fitting with a ball valve one on side and a washer and nut on the other. I loose about 1-2 deg during a 1 hour mash. I'm happy with it.

    Hop Rocket

Right on. Thanks! Can't wait to start playing with it!

    First time reusing yeast

Two days ago I pulled some yeast out of dump valve on my conical (OG 1.054 FG 1.008). I put it in a mason jar that had been soaking in Star-san. The jar is about half full and there is a line about 50/50 of thick yeast and wort on top. Should I go ahead and pitch it right in or should I make...
