Perhaps some etching cream would solve the problem? It's not paint, but it might count as a 'better way' - you could likely use it and then paint the etching, curing it as you are now, without the issue of stencil tearing?

This looks so good, and malty is my favourite characteristic in beer, so I might have to scale it to a gallon or so and make it my first brew.
