Of course you guys post this today! Yesterday brewers friend said I needed a 2L starter and yeastcalc says 1.5L

Firefox users would click file, save page as, rename the file what you want, keep the file type as "web page, complete", then save it where you want.

Talking about which stirplate formula to use, I noticed that when I started using Braukaiser's numbers my beers had been finishing higher than before. Only thing I changed in my process was the starter calculation formula. Meh, its something for me to figure out, I bet there are thousands of folks using Braukaiser's numbers and it works just fine. The difference between the two is Jamil's numbers are more conservative with the growth rates compared to Braukaiser for stir plates.

That's why I always used Braukaiser. C. White always told me to make larger starters.

Hah! "I wouldn't have this mess in my kitchen if I had used the right site to make me feel better about making a smaller starter!" ;)

Well I also used the wrong setting on Brewers Friend I think. I changed the target pitch rate to pro brewer high gravity ale 1.0. This setting suggested a 2L starter. If you leave it on the default setting (pro brewer .75 gravity ale) it suggests 1.5L, just like yeastcalc.com. The OG of my upcoming brew is estimated 1074. When would you use the higher setting on the brewers friend website?

As i posted on another thread, I've temporarily posted a copy online. I don't intend to leave this live forever here, hopefully yeastcalc.com will be back up soon, but for people here who want to use it:

THANKS!!!
I wish Beersmith supported multi stepped starters but it doesn't. I used yeastcalc all the time and was wondering how I am going to figure out stepped starters without it. I hope it comes back but thanks for posting a copy!

I pretty much only use the 1.0 setting, and if I were brewing a crazy big beer I would use 1.25.

Thanks mate. I'd switched over to Brewer's Friend, but got annoyed when it told me an Aug 29 packet of wyeast 3068 was 0% viable. Yeastcalc (thanks to you) tells me it should be 28%, which seems much more reasonable to me.

Ok, since there was no response and yeastcalc.com is still down, I decided to commit to stealing the yeast calculator there and posting it on a new site.

http://www.yeastcalculator.com/

I'm going to try to get the original URL as well if i can. Expect the website to change a little bit in the next few days (add the left menu back, change it so it isn't flash, credit the original author, etc.), but you can consider this a more permanent site.

Again, if anyone has contact with the owner/author of yeastcalc.com, please let me know...

Just went from a terrible gut feeling to extreme happiness! You truly are a gentleman and a scholar sir.:ban:

The domain name registry shows it updated yesterday and that the expiration is now in January 2015 so the domain name has been renewed. He may need to update the hosting account too because the site is still down.

I just saw that a few hours ago. Hopefully the site is back up soon and renders this whole thread moot. If so, I'll simply redirect yeastcalculator.com back to the original.

Can anyone explain the difference between the Zaineshef and Troester stir plate aeration methods?

I wouldn't normally advocate doing this but since Yeastcalc.com is still down you should know that you can save a copy of it to your local hard drive.

Here's how to do it if you use Firefox (Windows is very similar)
Go to archive.org and search for http://yeastcalc.com (you need the http:// in front of the url)
Select 2014 in the calendar at the top of the page, then click on the last saved date (Jan 8)
When the page is displayed move your cursor to the far right side of the screen (you do not want it on any of the graphics)
Right click and select View Page Info
Then select the Media button at the top
Find the file ending in YeastCalc_v4.0.swf
Single click on the file, then right click and select Copy
Open a directory on your local hard drive where you want to save the file and Save the file there
To access the file, go to the directory on you hard drive and then double click the YeastCalc_v4.0.swf file.
The Flash program will run from your hard drive and you will get same screen you see (or used to see) on the YeastCalc.com website.

I did this several months ago simple so I could get the info without being online. If the site comes back up then obviously this is not necessary.

cool idea, but can' seem to get it to work. i right click and copy but it doesn't seem to copy it...could be windows 8, i hate it!

Fire fox still works the same in windows 8 as it has in XP and windows 7. It will store your down load in its downloaded files directory under you user file (i think thats where it is.). Then you need to get into the windows 8 desktop that Microsoft decided to not default to and enable all the old icons you are used to seeing. Once I get home I can give you more detailed instruction with windows 8 in front of me.

thanks. i managed to get the file onto my desktop but when i double click it windows is asking me what app i want to use to open the file

You should be able to open it with Internet Explorer or Firefox.

In Windows:
1. Right-click the file and choose 'Open with'
2. Click on 'Choose default program...'
3. Select or browse for your preferred browser. Be sure the 'Always use the selected program...' box is checked so that it remembers what app it should use to open .swf files next time.

You will need flash installed to run the program. But you needed flash to run the website too. So if you could use the website you already have flash installed. Right click and select "open with" then select default program or select adobe flash.
