Hello everyone. My Wyeast 1214 yeast seems to be DOA. It was delivered 5 days after shipping, and the pack was hot as a beach model. 6 hours after smacking the pack it showed no signs of swelling. I still tried to make a starter but this is what it looks l like after 12 hours. No signs of activity whatsoever, and the yeast peacefully resting at the bottom of the flask. I'll give it another12 hours, only because I have to go to work, not because I have any hopes it'll start fermenting, and make another starter with yeast I'll get at my LHBS. My questions are these: Can I use this wort for the new starter? Should I boil it again in order to avoid infections? Can I boil it with the dead yeast in it, I've read they are good source of nutrients for healthy bacteria? Thank you all very much.

If it were me, I'd probably dump it and do a new starter. Otherwise you're pitching a whole bunch of dead yeast cells along with your starter. Most yeast nutrient contains some yeast hulls which are from dead yeast cells, but I don't think it's a good idea to intentionally pitch an entire smack pack of dead yeast cells in your wort.
