Hi all,
I was just wondering if I should be adding Yeast nutrient to my must. I just recently started a 5 gallon batch of Ed's Apfelwein (Thanks Ed), which is fermenting away but I was wondering if the must has all the nutrients required for healthy yeast? Thanks in advance.

I've never had a problem with ciders and nutrient. It wouldn't hurt too much to add a small quantity to the must.

The stuff I have suggests 1/2 tsp per gallon. So 2.5 tsp per 5 gal batch. (JD Carlson Yeast Nutrient)

If you use too much it will have an ammonia smell. I've used a whole bottle before (2 oz. in 5 gal) and it had a faint odor. This defect disapeared after a month or so of cellar temp storage in the bottle. Right now that batch is 9 months old and its absolutely perfect tasting.

I'd go with the suggestions on the container. It will do fine for you. :mug:

Thanks for the advice guys. I went ahead and added 4 tsp's of nutrient to the 5 gallons of cider which was already in it's 2nd day of fermentation. It worked really fast. The sulfur smell produced by the Montrachet yeast, vanished in less than 2 hours and was replaced with a nice fruity aroma and within about 4 hours, the rate of fermentation doubled! Amazing stuff!
