Hey I'm just curious how many people here yeast bank? I normally keep both frozen and slants with mineral oil. Also anyone into yeast trading? its a good way to find that next little wonder for your brew!!
I've been doing it for many years now. Its a great way to take your yeast wrangling to the next level!!!

I slant onto agar with mineral oil and keep in the fridge. I also top-crop. I only keep 'boring' British strains though so you've probably got them all.

Something I would love to do but I guess I don’t have what it takes. I read the long thread on here about freezing yeast with glycerine. Tried it a couple years ago. Bought the plastic tubes. Did everything it said. Tried to save off a Wyeast PC lager strain that I have uses for, 2035. After 3 months I tried to grow up one of the tubes and it was belgian as could be. Tried another tube, same result. Threw the rest away. Guess it ain’t for me.

I just started brewing in January, but after the first few batches I started freezing vilas with glycerin. I currently have 5 strains and have had good luck building starters from them. I’m still working on building my bank. 🍻

I bank in the freezer with a glycerin mix. Would love to do some yeast trading! Mainly for weird odd seasonal strains. The odd strains I have (many normal ones too) are

Elysian House Yeast (got that sent to me on plates straight from the brewery)
Koln (no longer in production)
WLP835 German Lager X
WLP815 Belgian Lager yeast
Imperial Joystick (aka Rogue Pacman no longer in production)
McGuires Irish Pub Pensacola Proprietary House Yeast (banked up straight from a jug of the lab pitch)

and about 20-30 or so more or the run of the mill available strains. Would love to get my hands on some of

White Labs Mythical Hammer
Wyeast 2575
Imperial POG
White Labs Austrailian Ale
White Labs Fast Lager

or one of the other rare strains for us homebrewers :)

I'm up for that. I lost all my mother cultures a few years back when a power outlet went out and I didn't know until it was too late. I've been slowly building up my bank again but I'd love to do some trading if you know a good way to ship them and keep them cold. My mothers are kept in mineral oil but not frozen.

I think I may have White Labs Australian Ale, I was just doing some prep on a few escarpment labs unusual varieties as well.

I been using this technique for years , I've sent worldwide. (I'm in Canada)

Did you autoclave everything? Curious what you think the disconnect was.

Oh man I've been wanting to get my hands on some Escarpment labs strains. Especially the Kveik side of things. For Kveik I currently have

Lallemand

Voss

Omega

Lutra
Espe
Hothead (aka Stranda)

White Labs

Hornidal
Opshaug

Was really curious to see how Escarpment Labs Krispy performed

I’m a homebrewer. Why would I own an autoclave? I used Star San on everything, wiped the table and work area with disinfecting wipes, etc. I don’t own a lab or work in a lab. I did the best I could.

A pressure cooker works as an autoclave. Star san is effective but not 100%. When brewing the stars san will reduce the bad microbes to the point the yeast will dominate....
Pressure, heat and time will completely sterilize. When dealing with such small sample of yeast you want no other contaminants.
