Friend gave me this. Said he found it in his garage and has no clue how old it is. Based off of looks I'd say about 5 years.

Obviously I'd buy new yeast lol. I have my 2 gal mr beer keg just sitting around so I was gonna mess around and see what happens, but I don't wanna risk getting sick in case this stuff goes rotten when it spoils. Judging by the looks, would you try using it? It's a little rusty but still seems to be holding pressure.

Not unless I was stranded on a deserted island, starving and it washed up on shore. Even then, I'd have to think about it.
 
Is it gonna kill you? No. You'll boil it for an hour and kill anything that might be harmful.

Is it gonna taste good? No. The best case is that it is just oxidized and tastes like cardboard.
 
I say brew it. Boiling will sanitize it, so it will be safe. It MAY taste terrible, and make you want to toss it out. It MAY turn out OK, and you will have beer to drink. If you throw it out without brewing, then you have a 100% chance of NO BEER. If you brew it, there is at least a SMALL chance it will be OK enough to drink. I say go for it! You have nothing to lose but time and $3 on a fresh yeast packet.
 
If you value your time at all, no. Even if you don't value your time, still no.

If you're just dying to find out how bad it could be, then yes.
 
Ya seems like a waste of your time to me. But if you want to brew it go ahead. It might taste like crap it might be drinkable who knows. But me no i wouldn't.
 
Also if you do boil that to kill anything bad. Don't forget you'll have to add hops. Thats a hopped extract and i think its a no boil extract at that. So now take in account you'll have to buy yeast and some hops. Not much hops but still additional cost for your it might be good project.
 
Make it a project. heck, go split batch and do 1 gal straight-up, and 1gal with your favorite steeped grains and hops.

Challenge yourself. How cool would you be if you could serve your friends Mr Beer, and they couldn't tell???? :rockin:
 
This is exactly what ruined my one bad BB kit. I had some 3+ year old LME(like yours) and I tossed it in. Was the worst beer ever. Still to this day. I wouldn't do it again.
 
That right there is good for making starter wort and that is it. And even then, make sure to crash the starter and pour that crap off of it, you don't want to drink that.
 
You ever have friends over on brew day?

They ever bring nothing, mooch your homebrew, don't help, leave when they've finished off your beer leaving you with nothing cold to drink?

Brew this up. Don't even try to make it palatable. Put it in your fridge with a half dozen different labels on brew day, and hide your good stuff.
 
There are many threads on here where people have brewed using old cans of extreact. If I recall correctly, rarely do they end up good, but hey. Its cheap/free and why not? Worst that can happen is it tastes terrible and can be used to kill slugs and such.
 
I'm not sure about Mr Beer LME,but I brewed a 2 year old Cooper's OS Lager can once with plain DME & hops,& got this;

Color & flavor came out like a session version of Paulaner's Salvator Doppel Bock. and I even made a small starter for the 2 year old Cooper's ale yeast. The can came out quite good. but there's no guarantee that they will,even with a good process.
 
As an experiment if you have the time, yes. (I'd probably try it just out of morbid curiousity).

If you have some extra hops laying about, throw em in..brown sugar it up..franken-hooch.
