Decided to do something a little light on the hop side for the hot summer months coming up in Texas and just ran out and picked up a cream ale kit from brewers best last minute. It's been awhile since I did an all extract kit and the directions were a little off to me. Long story short, I ended up adding the DME at the same time as the LME and found out I was supposed to add it 40 minutes after adding the LME. My OG was 1.040 and supposed to be in the 1.049 range. Should I be worried??

nope, you will still end up with beer, just slightly less alcoholic. I made the cream ale kit from BB, and it turned out quite well. Let it ferment, bottle, enjoy. RDWHAHB

I'm not sure how you ended up with an incorrect OG when you're using extract... but your beer will be just fine.

Thanks guys. I was thinking the same thing that it would just have a low ABV. Regardless of the turn out, Im sure I'll still drink it!

Might not have mixed it thorough when you took the gravity and adding the DME early will make it a little darker than what the recipe intended, that's it :mug:

The ONLY change will be that your beer might be a fizz darker due to carmelazation of the sugars while boilig.

Good news! Odds are extremely high that your OG was not, in fact, low. Did you use top off water to hit your volume?

If you hit the correct volume, and you added the correct amount of extract, your OG was right - the wort simply wasn't 100% mixed. The yeast will do that for you.

It's tough - close to impossible - to get a truly homogenous mixture when topping off. Since you were using extract, you don't have to worry about efficiency; just assume the OG specified in the kit, and all will be well.

So it came out tasting fine....but dry?? The initial taste is a very light cream ale but finishes so dry it almost gives you cotton mouth. Color is a little darker as expected.
