Anyone tried yeast washing from a 6 gal plastic winpak?

I am about to keg from 2 of these containers and would like to collect some yeast from them before cleaning. With a carboy you can see the layers settle after adding boiled/cooled water and also see what you are pouring as you collect yeast but I won't be able to with the winpaks.

I was thinking I might rinse and collect the slurry from the winpak and pour it into a carboy to settle but that's one more transfer and opportunity for infection not to mention another item to clean later.

Any experiences from others shared here would be appreciated.

How about those who use buckets for fermenting? Do you just add water to make a sluury, let settle for a while then pour some amount off, or do you transfer to galss to see what's going on?

Yes, I use buckets and pour my water in swirl it up and let it sit with the lid on for 20-30 minutes, then pour off into large canning jars, then let it settle another 20-30 minutes and pour into my smaller jars.

I have been successful, and used my first gen washed yeast about 2 weeks ago. The yeasties lived!:rockin:

BTW one of my first washings was left in the fridge for about 3 months before I used it and it worked great!

Same here. Works great!

You are welcome, it is truly great when you can buy a vial of White Labs for ~$7 and get 20-25 uses out of it. Of course, if you are diligent enough to wash the yeast over 5 generations or so.

Big savings $$$!:rockin:
