why the anti hooch thread

Hey, can't we move this thread to the new debate forum? Then we could REALLY say what we think about hooch threads!

I'm interested in the ABV of my beer. I admit it, I want something that I can feel if it's properly balanced. I've experimented a little to get a higher ABV, but soon found that all short cuts are always at the expense of wasting a good ale. There is nothing to be gained from ignoring the excellent advice on this forum. To continue hooch threads would dimininish this valuable resource.

Well here's an interesting spin on this....My interest in beer/wine making was spawned by DIY co2 for my aquarium. water sugar and yeast wonderful for the plants. Then I thought I wonder what this stuff tastes like.....so I take a sip, well it tasted lite sugar water. Next batch I mixed up I used apple juice instead of sugar and water, Tasted much better but not good. next thing you know I'm on hbt learning to make beer!

The funniest thing is my beer got me to buy a co2 tank something the aquarium plants couldn't....Thinking back I could have saved a lot of money if I had just bought the co2 tank in the first place

I've made a few batches that college kids looking for a buzz would probably call 'hooch', but they were all made according to style. A Belgian Dark Strong that's 12.5% abv is not hooch.

6# of table sugar and a can of hopped extract fermented with bread yeast - now that's hooch

Ok, folks, back to talking about beer. Man, my Oktoberfest is going strong from yesterday. I had a lag time of 1 hour by pitching on a yeast cake.

No we haven't... but to better explain, a new "member" shows up and instantly starts talking about making hooch just to get drunk... It is safe to say that most all are under 21. Its just not worth it. I consider homebrewing a priviledge that I don't want to be taken away by encouraging any of that stuff.

The first post stated that he was 30 years old. Then a few posts later, he was 47 years old. Then a few after that, he had been brewing for 30 years.

Not to mention the amount of misspelled words and his overall demeanor in every one of his posts, this guy is most likely one of the underage kids that have been discussed throughout this thread. It's probably makingitgood back again.

I'd had some wonderfully smooth moonshine before. I have a few older friends who have done some of their own home distillation. Many of them learned this from family who passed it down.

Distillation can be dangerous, its illegal, and I don't personally think it belongs here. There are other forums that discuss home distillation out there. Stay safe man.

I like a nice Hootch and I know there is an art to it but I really dont care if its talked about here.

I come on here to talk a bout beer brewing. There are other sites that you can talk about hootch on.

Im not against it and I know not everyone is under age that wants to talk about it.

My uncle has been making it for years and is as passionate as we are about beer with it.

in Canada where I live a kid can go to a wine shop and buy some turbo yeast and sugar at the store. The funny thing is no kid will drink that crap it has to be distilled and I dont think talking about making stills is condusive to the site.

Google stills and there are a ton of other places to go talk it.

Recipes should be aloud but the distilling of it shouldn't be

I didn't even know what hooch was 'till I came to this forum. I mean, I've heard the word, just never knew what is was really. Then I remembered prison hooch. I guess besides the underage thing, why would anyone want to make this when you can walk to the liquor store and buy some cheap stuff. Yuck.

Making good Hootch is an art just like making beer. I wouldn't cut it down.

Yeah we dont want to talk about it here and thats fine but there is an art to making quality hootch. Some people are passionate about it.

I'm not positive about this so call me out on it if I'm wrong.. I think ice beers and ice wines are considered distilled or illegal if the freezing is done post fermentation. I think its considered legal to freeze your wort, remove the ice, and then ferment. I'm not an expert on distillation and its laws but this is just some stuff I've picked up in my beer readings.
