Don't know if anyone mentioned him yet.. but Gary Moore... No contest IMO...
yeah, he's the guy all your guitar heroes mention if you ask 'them' this question....

RIP Gary.. This world is a less rockin' place without you....

I'm not knocking one of the best rock/blues players, but this is about BANDS. This disqualifies a lot of great artists who were solo acts.

This is a hard topic because there are so many bands who were awesome for their own thing. One may be fantastic at songwriting, another for passion, another for fun...

I think the one thing they all have in common is that they were greatest when they were young. I think growing old limits your ability to create and express yourself. You start wanting to preach ideals and can't seem to "let go" like you could when you were young.

or maybe it's because they are usually off drugs by that time...

I don't think anyone here (besides me, of course) has the musical knowledge to completely appreciate Nickelback. I've taken a lot of music theory classes and still can not completely comprehend their music. Here is a video of them playing some of their most raw and emotional music.

I can see what u "think" but realistically nickleback is just another crappy band playing off of fake emotions

i think the greatest band of all time, in regards to my opinion is Savatage. moving, emotional, heavy, awesome composition, diverse, interesting, thought provoking, and badass.

I also say Tool. Of course I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Adam Jones once in his trailer after a show, so I might be biased. Plus his brother is cool as hell too and he's a homebrewer.

Maynard is kind of "unique" though.

A disturbing amount of people are mentioning Tool, If we were on a musicians forum they'd not get one mention, what is that saying about homebrewers?

This is about the greatest band ever......

This guy has to be the most amazing performer of my generation!

That song is in the top 3 that my brain plays when I'm at work. Man that guy can't dance... and what's up with the trench coat..

I know they are too obvious, so I'll just come out and say it:

Van Halen

The new album should be coming out soon, so yes, they are still "current".

This. And I didn't know about a new album, so I'll have to research.

Pearl Jam and Weezer are also in my top 3
